Please Help---Resin vs Catalyst

I am using the standard clear cote surf board grade polyester resin. It has the clear blue tint. However the catalyst they gave me turns the resin yellow. Is there a special catalyst to use. I talked to the store I bought it from and they said they have no idea. What do I use. Please help before I waste all my resin.

All the resin I’ve ever used turns kind of blue green when you add the catalyst. I’ve never had any problems with the boards coming out funky. What brand of catalyst are you using?

The words “clear cote” suggest to me that you may have been sold gloss resin as opposed to laminating resin. Where I live plastic shops frequently sell a resin labeled “Surfboard Resin” - it is gloss resin. This type of resin, because of the additives, will frequently harden with a yellow, pink, or blue-green tint if put on thick. While there are a number of “standard” resins, the popular brand of late is Silmar. Hope this helps some.Patrick

you should be using MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) as a catalyst, if you are using a polyester surfboard laminating resin like silmar 249. MEKP is a very caustic chemical, and you will use adequate protection for your skin, eyes, and respiratory i hope. the gloss resin that i’m used to seeing comes out of the can a purplish-red. good luck, ramon
