MOST surfers are incapable of outsurfing a hybrid shape. A kid can always grow into the 90s potato chip later on, but for now the rudimentary basics of catching the wave and popping up without falling over is the thing. We’re not talking about HI conditions where managing the energy from an open ocean swell becomes Job #1. The OP is on the east coast where generating the energy to get going is the thing.
Thanks everyone for the input! I decided on a 4’8" shaped similar to the McCoy Nugget, but a little narrower forward and wider tail. I took my gromlet to GreenLightSurf today to order the blank (their 5’3 performance shortie) that I will knock a bit of the nose and tail off of. He was stoked about our trip!
