Two years ago, I made myself a SUP out of a Burford PU blank, one that was used to make sailboards back then, with “wideners” in it. Since this was my first try at stand-up paddling, I made it very wide and thick so that the learning time would not be too hard. As it turned out, the board is very pleasant to ride once in the water but you’d better park the car not too far from it…Weight is definitely an issue for carrying the board, but it seems to be a good thing for paddling because of inertia and easier to glide through chop. It was glassed just like a longboard -6oz bottom, 2 x 6oz top- as I didn’t want to add too much weight; besides, the anti-skid patch on the deck adds some protection from pressure dings, so additional layers of glass are not really necessary.
I use this board strictly for paddling along the coast, no surfing with it. First, because I’m not good enough at it to endanger others and second I don’t think it’s fair.
