Polyurethane Varnish For Gloss coating epoxy?

Does any one use PU-varnish (2part) as a final (gloss) coat on boards laminated with epoxy?

Is it possible to use it to make a sanded gloss coat?

Is it possible to sand and polish to high gloss?

Are there any drawbacks to using PU varnish?

How do You use it, are there any special tricks to using PU varnish or is it applied in the same way as any other gloss coat?

…is possible to use…, but if you go for a shine finish is really better to shine on the resin not a varnish…so if still you will use it, and you will go for a high gloss, you should go for a thick layer…so you will do at least 3 or 4 coats…(if you dont do this you will obtain an orange like type finish)…then polish

I’ve used a two part PU boat varnish once, I used foam rollers and a foam brushes to put it on. It can be sprayed, but it the one I used flows out beatifully. Just go slowly with the foam roller so you don’t create too many bubbles and go over it afterward with the foam brush to remove any bubbles. Keep the foam brush moist when you remove the bubbles with long strokes. If you do this well you can get a finnish that is almost as good as sprayed. You need atleast two coats, but then it’s quite shiny and you hardly have to polish. The more coats the better. Those two part boat varnishes are supposed to be super though, but I was not too impressed. IMHO it scratches a little on the easy side.

Ask in a good boat supply shop, they usually know everything there is to know about varnishes and how to apply them. Then again, some of those people have the patience to lay down 8 coats of varnish on an entire boat every year and that may not be what you’re after…

Bumping this one again…

I got some clear 2 part UV resistant polyurethane gloss coating from the boat shop. They told me to clean the sanded board with soap and water, dry with lint free cloth and apply with a clean brush a coat, let it dry, sand with 120, wash and apply again. They said if done this way a shiny clean surface should be the result. I am going to try this but I wanted to check if anyone has had any experiences in the meantime.

I am looking forward to your results…

yep it works great

brushed and cut back and polished

or if you practise you can get close to gloss from the spray gun

it buffs out well

but not as optically good as a poly resin gloss coat

home user would be best to brush and wet and dry
