OK , I know I have sinned 2 of my 7 boards are “popouts” made by one of the 2 main companys. Ones a 9’6" and the one I just bought is a 9’0" both the exact model and shape . Trouble is the 9’0" weighs 2 pounds more than the 9’6" . I dont see any dings in it.But how can I tell if it has soaked up water somehow? Or is there some other possible explanation?I took it surfing and see no water leakage anywhere . namely the fin box or leash plug . Please help the poor sinner 3 of my other boards are custom shaped by you guys and 1 is a 70’s I’m just saving… Thanks for any help I can get.
man, you havent sinned- you just went for something different- if you are experiencing probs with your poopout,i ment to say popout- sorry- i dont believe this site would offer much constructive critisism. i could be wrong, and thats ok too.
…The 9-0 is most likely NOT leaking,it probably is constructed differently.(Boardworks vs. Surftech) eg. Boardworks has several stringers in them, where as the Surftechs donot.Herb
in my experience: 2 boards-the same model-same size surftech might have a different weights than each other. some factors: vaneer, color(yes different colors and combinations of colors weigh different) or batch of boards. Sometimes the same color-same model will be a pound or two more than another one from the same batch for no real reason. Maybe it has to do with how Thailand does in the World Cup or what was served at Cobra for lunch. I used to work with a bunch of mexican and central american guys and a day’s productivity often went along with what was going on in soccer or who had what in there lunch to share that day. have fun
Although there have been a lot of negative things said about pop outs, I believe, or would like to believe, that most of the contributors here are mature enough to realize that for some, pop outs are a viable option to custom or off the rack boards made in the traditional sense. I know that they may be taking some business from the ones here that make boards for a living, but if it works ok for them who is anyone to say otherwise. If they dont like the way the boards ride or hold up, cool, then they can come back and get a regular board. So far, Ive heard 50/50 for and against them. From what I have observed, heavier surfers seem to like them. A friend on mine has really improved since getting on a SurfTech.
A board that rides well is a good board regardless if it’s a popper or a backyard/garage special. You gets whats you pay for. If it rides, Just ride it, brother.
Surftech has been known to change their glass schedule according to feedback from usage. It takes about three months to get a shipment from overseas,so changes do happen. If you really want the honest answer to your questions, call Randy French @ surftech in Santa Cruz , Ca. They are in the phone book. Most people here do not know much about the technology and development at surftech. Go to the source first , you will get the answers there.
Three months to get a shipment from overseas? Thatll be an interesting scenario if mainstream surfing ever awakens from its coma. Progressive custom boards can change overnight when necessary. But for overseas mass-produced molded boards, a time span of three months+ could easily spell "obsolete". Inability to adapt quickly- that
s what drove the dinosaurs to extinction.

they maybe slightly behind the progession curve as far as design, but that’s not their primary market. They’ll always be cheaper, and theres always cheap people. Infact most surfers are cheap. Including me.
People are riding a lot of off-the-rack boards. Those may as well be pop-outs, even if they’re hand-made. Computer-shaped, or computer-assisted, custom boards should be defined as pop-outs. Randy French is the future and the future is now.
I think you may have the mind set of computor shapes to be human-assisted shapes? [wink] I am curious as to your ancient mindset, why would you consider it to be a pop-out?

Nothing will ever replace the relationship of surfer and shaper, especially when the shaper knows what he , or she is doing.
Even if the shaper uses CAD CAM technology? [wink]

Always wondered. If the people who promote Surftech are so convinced about the credibility and riding characteristic’s of the product, why don’t they ride themselves? Robert, AKA Wingnut, now work’s for them, and sings their praises, but does not ride one himself. Burned enough bridges and now it is just show me the money?
I don’t understand why, what is your reasoning?
still room in our landfill [smile]
Is the pop out design any less valid than the handshaped if it rode better?
