portable shaping lights...suggestions?

anyone use them? and what makes them portable?

searched the archives. the only thing i came up with was a ‘pedastal’ idea to afix the lights to. ideas?? i was thinking something along the lines of a shaping rack but i don’t know. im kind of lost. probably b/c i dont really know the nature of the lights themselves…

would just two 4’ers, one on each side of the stand be sufficient? i don’t have that much room…

thanks!

buy two of these

work great and dirt cheap

And if your pockets are a little deeper, you could go for something like this:

hey, I am not sure what you plan on shaping, or if you do you own glassing, but if you plan on using EPS and glassing with these lights, they give off large amounts of heat. This heat will cause the foam to gass, and from experience, leads to fish eyes during hotcoating. If not, you will just have some hot lights beside you when shaping.

I would stick to the 4’ flourescent tubes. 20 bucks at homedepot gets the sockets and ballasts. No heat, and nice light. Maybe, like you said rig up some stands for them, or hang them from chains from your roof.

didn’t think of that one yet. there’re a bunch of ceiling hooks for bikes and such where i work…i like that idea. thanks!

i don’t know about chains though…i thought i read in an archive about fishing line??

I made these with 2x4’s, 1x6’s and scrap plywood. Sort of a pain to move around and take up a bit of room but they make a great shelf to set down dusty tools while shaping. I since added a lower shelf on one for more tool organzation. They are single 4 foot lamps - work OK but have to move them when doing a longboard! No space for eight footers. I thought of the chain hanging idea but it wouldn’t work with my roll-up garage door. Plus, I suspect it would be hard to keep them steady while you shape.

Amazing what $40 will buy you these days!

Nice setup there Ted.

i like that…cool…

how do the lights themeselves stay put? are they screwed in or do they just sit there?

The light fixtures are screwed into a 1x6 mounted as a “wall” on the 2x4’s, right under the 1x6 “shelf”. Mostly I used screws vs nails, it’s pretty solid. I thought about putting little wheels on them but they don’t weigh much. With 8 ft lights it would just be too unwieldy, but you could do four of these if you have a large enough space.

Also, the butt joint of the 1x6’s is reinforced with those little steel angle brackets from the hardware store. No glue so I can break it all down if need be. Same with the stands.

here’s what i did…

found some old nylon rope laying around from a former swing mounted the lights on existing bicycle hooks in the ceiling. they are easily removable by just detaching the lights from the hooks and sliding the ropes off the bicycle hooks. I had to move one set of hooks over to create enough space to actually shape. the ropes are adjustabe by pulling up or down on the knots. pretty cool I think.
