Hey Mauricio, looking at your vintage photos made me nostalgic. I went and dug out my old photo albums. I found these photos from that trip. Please pardon the early 80’s swimwear! We didn’t surf Baleal. We went to the seawall just south of the Peniche fishing port. I think it is the same spot in the video you posted. Every afternoon I was there the waves looked like the bottom photo… and almost no one out.
nice photo , that is molhe leste
I have one very rare board form 1984 that was used in molhe leste .
check this out -
still loking mighty fine , someday she will return to the water
it was very strange how they used twin fin to surf hollow waves ?
you probably had something like this board in those day ?
paddle out on a 8 or 9 footer and you would own that break. backdoor it . be on your feet before it breaks and before shortboarders and lids get there sh!t together
Hey Mauricio,
In 1982 I was riding a thruster I got in Biarritz ( a Barland). I went to Portugal with two French surfers. If the people in Portugal were riding short, wide twin fins back then it might have been the influence of these two French surfers- Eric Graciet and Joel Darrigues. You should ask any of the old time locals if they have heard of these names. These two surfers were so good! They literally surfed circles around me. I saw one (I can’t remember which) do a carving 360…in 1982! It was unheard of back then. They both rode boards like the one pictured and told me thrusters were too stiff.
I went back to Peniche in 1985 and it was already changing. They were building a big hotel behind the beach at Molhe Leste (?). They were more German tourists and more surfers. I will look for pictures from that trip.
Paul, you could rule the peak on an 8 footer…until someone else comes out on a 9 footer…then someone else comes out on a 10-6 glider, the the SUPs will arrive…
Dont go further then that .
one of the locals , here in peniche, rides a longboard (special made) when supertubos is big and hollow .
He is the king of supertubos , when dane reynolds was surfing here, he just sood and stare at him riding those massive tubes in a longboard .
i would like to see someone do that in a SUP , eh eh .
that hotel still goes on today, its called the soleil hotel
about the rails , i know i have to do something like the number I , but wich one ?
more angle ? of full but lay down ?
6´1 18 1/2 2 1/2 ? sounds good ? more foam ?
what should be the nose and tail wide ?
this is what looks like on the software .
pm me your email, I can send you a file for a board.

Nice Shots Mr. Cannon.
Here it is the quick tour trough peniche waves .
this is a map of peniche .
Lets start with the waves south of peniche and move up north .
Consolação rights
This is a point break wave .
It’s a very good right hander on a reef bottom, for intermediate and
advance surfers. It’s fast and tubby on the inside .
supertubos
Considered the best wave in Portugal and one of the best in Europe . It
is a fast and tubular wave which breaks on a hollow sand bank.
If you are an expert and like to be barrelled then this is the spot for you!
the crazy take off …
molhe leste (already pictured on this topic, and local surfer waves only )
now were moving north of peniche …
meio da baia(bay, baleal)
This is a long extension of 2.5 Km of beach that starts in Peniche and
ends in Baleal. It has got several surf spots breaking on neat sand
banks. These waves are excellent for
beginners and intermediate surfers. They are soft and slow breaking .
lagide
This is a famous reef break. It is a long left hand breaking on a coral
reef. It is a very manoeuvrable wave with several fast and slow
sessions.
It is ideal for intermediate and advance surfers.
almagreira
Belgas You can always find a lonely wave for you. beach break tipe
you can always find a wave in peniche to surf.
every day is a wave waiting to be ridden .
the water does not drop bellow 16 º C , and the air temperature does not drop bellow 10 º C .
there are still more waves to be shown , for example betwen belgas and almagreiras you can have about 6-7 working waves, betwen lagido and almagreira you have 5 working waves .
plus the secrets (and one of them is way crazzzzzzzzzzier than supertubos( its just called by the locals mini pipeline… so you can just imagine …)
Mauricio
i need to visit potugal !
I forgot to tell you what is going on in peniche.
Peniche has been an important fishing village .and mainly lives from the fish trading and exporting .
many of the industry´s are related to fish .
now , there is a project to build a deep water port , south of peniche . this port(harbour) will be able to expand peniche fishing reach with bigger ships and more quantity .
the only place were it can be build is south of peniche, and it would go from consolação to molhe leste .
it would kill consolação, SUPERTUBOS, medão, and molhe leste waves .
Many of the locals are prone to the building of the port, because it would create jobs, commerce . keep in mind that the big industry in peniche is fishing . I dont know the statics but a LOT of people want this port .
supertubos wave only is avaliated in 100 millions € but it cannot generate that amount of money . the port(harbour) probably can …
for this year the waves are secured , because rip curl por search 2011 is already scheduled .
but for the upcoming years …
this is why environmental economics is important. And this is why I hope next year we finally see some really really good supertubos.
