Possibly dumb question about narrowing a template

I have just made an mdf template from a paper template, and it ended up with a nice curve, but too wide. Could i just trim 3/8'' off the flat edge, to get it to the width i want?? Probably a stupid question, but i think it'd be a lot easier, and a lot less work than trimming the curve back by 3'8''.

Cheers

John told you true.

Hi Beerfan -

If you like the curve, stick with it.  Ignore the straight edge and how it lines up with the stringer... simply 'shift' the template so the curve lines up with your predetermined width points.  The straight edge of the template can be placed past the stringer as long as the curve of the template pattern lines up with your width points.  You also can shift the template fore and aft and use different end points... the end of the template pattern doesn't have to be the end of the outline.   If the curve fits better, shift it.  The straight edge doesn't even have to be parallel with the stringer.  My templates have all kinds of little marks where I've crossed the stringer - sometimes 6" or more from the end of the pattern.  Don't be afraid to use your template pattern like a draftsman uses a french curve.

BLA BLA BLA.  What I'm trying to say is.... If you like the curve you have and it is the perfect length, just shift it so it lies 3/8" over the stringer.

Thanks john, i figured it'd be ok, just wanted to make sure. I got a sweet template ( thanks trjm63! ), and i dont wanna mess it up. Soooooo excited!!
