power planer?

hey is it an ok idea to use a planer on the deck? i mean its not flat so wont this cause a problem? i usually use a small hand plane to scrape the crust of the bottom, and it peels like tape just perfect ,can i skip this step with a power planer? but my main concern is should i use the power planer on the deck? you know the crust is much different there

nevermind ill reply to my own question sortof…no wait , im shure it is ok to use it on the deck , but what about the nose ? do i need to switch to another method once the planer dosent hit the foam>or what? back to the shureform? hell i guess ,what do you think?

A thin cut off the deck with the power planer is fine. If you dont know what your doing then id recommend you stay away from the nose with the planer…8-12in do the rest by hand +surform

You’re okay using it on the deck… Just as you get towards the nose, close it up some, and go easy. Also in the nose area you’ll have to angle the planer due to nose rocker - by angle I mean still keep it flat on the board, but rotate it so less paralell with the stringer… Hard to explain but you’ll see what I mean once there. Just go slow and easy with it on the nose. When in doubt, switch back to the Surform or sanding block.

I mainly use the planer for skinning and then shape with a block, foam, etc.

Best,
