Well, it’s about time, Roy. Twin tunnels? Hope you and your are having a Merry Christmas. MIke
looks good – waiting to see more progress pics.
Merry Christmas Mike, no tunnels, just marine ply keels.
Beautiful work,
I just made a 6’2"fishy. Fun fun fun.Amazing how fast the sanding goes on a little board.
Keep us posted on the final weight and pictures please.
Ian
nice one roy
you better not surf it
they can be habbit forming
This one’s for the grommets, I would be keen if I was living on the point at Whale Bay again but might need a big boy fish for the Mount.
It’s 12 pounds right now, some wood still to come off, resin to add.
Stoked with the Paulownia it’s coming out slightly lighter than a solid balsa, much like a moderately chambered balsa, which is a density I’m really comfortable with, feasible for shortboards and also nice for longboards because I can go thinner for flex without losing buoyancy.
Are you riding a fish ?
…
yes i have recently
unless the surf is over 8ft faces
im mainly riding a eps keel fish
i love it, in even hollow conditions
its fast off the mark and can be surfed vert or just cruizing.
i think the fish design would suit your flex style construction
could be amazing
the traditional fish is a valid performance surfboard imo
i was surfing it in three foot walls today and switched to a potato chip pupe
the fish was noticeably faster and easier to surf
first pupe ive ridden in months
it felt very unlively compared to a compsand or an eps/epoxy
this is the outline
Nice outline, what’s your opinion on fins re. thickness, toe in etc ?
.
Nice looking fish roy. Are you going to do rounded (50 /50) rails as per your other PPSB?
I have used 6mm ply on my 9" by 5" keels this works ok but would go to 9mm on the next one as with the foiled edges I used to get a few cuts on my toes. 4 degree cant and 1/4 toe in worked good for me.
A fat boy fish worked well for me at the other end of the BOP last summer.
cheers
Thanks for the fin dims Kirikcore, the board’s got a 30/70 continuous downrail which I do sometimes, I have 4 10mm marine ply keel fins cut out, was planning to glue two panels together to make a 20mm thick fin panel , which would allow a 10:1 ratio at the base, but am wondering about 10mm , at 20:1 it’s pretty thin though and with those kids grinding fins into the sand might be better to go thick. I presume that your fins are flat on the inside ? It’s a boxy looking thing but handsome is as handsome does and no doubt it will do the deed.
I foiled both sides as much as you can with only 6mm ply and used a couple of layers of 6oz over and rovings and probally ended up with a 3-4mm leading edge. I am not a fin expert but would have called 20mm too thick even at the base. My big dee fin is only 16mm thick and boy it looks thick. 10mm would look fine and with glass and a roving edge would stand up to a fair bit of riding onto the sand.
Never even thought of base to thickness ratios are there any merits to them or theories?
My current 6’2" build is almost a PPSB as i wanted to keep a bit of volume in it 35mm nose 50mm mid 40mm tail at a guess
cheers
We often do fins at 10:1 sometimes even fatter, our current tunnels are 20 :1
Your fish fins are about 37:1 at the base.
The thickness of the fin isn’t relevant by itself it has to be expressed as a thickness to length ratio.
.
well its basically if you foil both sides its less or no toe in
one side flat can have more toe in
i had a flat side and the toe in was very slight (about 1/8th or less)
the boards doesnt feel tracking at all, in fact its very loose
i used 12 mm and i dont feel it was thick enough(or i took to much out toward the tips)
theres a lot of pressure on fin with that much area in hard turns
and they will flex alot, if there too thin
mine also were not very well foiled ,so they hum a little as well in hard turns.
i think 12 to 14 mm at the base would be a good basis to start
and keep the foil nice and rounded and full
in saying that though its all new to me so im not that sure
but after initial trials
i would go for fuller, fatter foils
That is lookin’ sweet… How you doing the rocker? Are you bending the wood?
haapy xmass and new years!
Hi Dave, yes it is bent, we have four panels (deck, bottom and two frame and rail block panels) which are made on a flat table and then sandwiched together and bent on a rocker table.
Shaping nearly done
Resin going on tomorrow, just under 12 pounds in weight at present
i can see that thing is gunna go unreal

why resin roy? how about a little linseed oil. i have a tom wegener paulownia fish on loan at the moment & that’s what he’s doing.
