Thanks for all your comments both good and bad. I have found a guy in Maui that has the Surf board shaping machine that can handle my needs. And if you are someone whom can help as well then please leave me a message. So I’ll see you guys arround and keep you eye’s out for my boards. Jason
Jason: Are you gonna name the boards that you will have “personally glassed and shaped by someone else” and put a logo on them of your own? I think your idea is very unique, yet may not be profitable. Most of the guys here at Swaylocks, including me, think you got the whole production thing backwards. Most beginning board builders either shape and glass their boards, or shape and have the glassing done elsewhere. You’re doing the “elsewhere” part instead of the “in-house” part, and trying to make money. I guess it could work if you get a very inexpensive shaper to work for you.

This is “The New Economy”, isn’t it? I’ve seen pro surfer turned shaper do this many times. With minimal experience and maximum hype and marketing I think Jason has a better chance than anyone else have had in the past. You’ll never know till you try, I say go for it!

Dude, don’t listen to these guys. Do your thing. But I have an even better idea. Instead of looking for pre-shaped blanks and then adding the glass, then marking it up, skip straight to the marking up part. If you go to the local surf shop you can get boards that are not only pre-shaped, but have glass and fins already on them. They are complete boards. You could buy those and then mark them up and sell them. Just don’t tell anyone our little secret. I would hate for them to figure out that they can get the board at a shop instead of from you. Oh, wait. Shoot, CostCo already beat us to it. Darn, and I wanted to get really rich selling surfboards. Well, guess I’ll have to make surf clothing. I wonder if that’s profitable. I can get old women and children in poor Asian countries to sweat it out all day making cheap clothing with my label on it. I’ll pay them a couple bucks a day, just enough to feed their families with rice and a few vegetables, no meat. I just hope they don’t get sick. I won’t be able to pay for that. Maybe there will be some other starving peasant to take their place if they get sick, hurt, lost, etc. It’s all starting to make sense. Dude, don’t worry. It’s really easy to get rich without working really, really hard. Just play the lottery or sell drugs. Or, maybe you can concentrate as hard as you can and invent an overnight sensation, like the Pet Rock, Rubic’s Cube, or the Frisbee. Who knows? You might be so successful that you can buy your way into the governor’s mansion in California, or the Whitehouse. Wait a minute. Are you George Bush?

Dang it! Now you’ve gone and told this guy the secret to making money in surfboards. Well, since it’s outta-the-bag now, I should add a couple more secrets that can help this ambitious “Glasser Of Ghost Shaped Blanks”. Instead of buying quality pre-shaped blanks from your source such as Clark Foam, Walker, or any other quality yet expensive blank, request that your shaper use regular ol’ styrofoam from Home Depot. Also just go with one layer 4oz. glass on the deck and bottom. Your profit margin will increase dramatically! GOOD LUCK!

Well Geez, First you develop his logistical strategy for him, now you’ve come up with his logo name, ‘Glasser of Ghost Shaped Blanks’, maybe we should market them for him… anyone want to spearhead the T-shirt design? …it’s only a matter of time before I hear “Dude, my GGSB totally rides better than this…” out in the lineup.

Haha this is a funny topic to read. I was just reading through and someone mentioned shaping your own blanks and then sending it to get glassed. I live in Florida and was wondering if anyone knew of any good glass shops in FL preferably East Coast FL or Central FL. I shaped my own blanks but would rather have it glassed because I don’t have the space and it makes to much mess. Thanks!

Anyone know of a good ghost auto builder? I’m goin to quit shaping and and dive into the automobile market, better yet i’m going to buy a whole bunch of BMW’s and take the emblems off and put mine on them and sell them and make a fortune while learn how to build a car myself. This should go over real well with auto industry. The surfboard building industry should have some kind of governing body if people like this try this crap for profit and nothing else. I’m all for the backyard shaper and big name guys if it is done right and with respect for everyone else who is doing it. Aloha, 808 shapes
