Prepping a board for glassing

I’m about to send off a few boards to a glass shop for the first time and wanted to get some info about what expectations they will have when I bring my board there. How fine should I sand the board? Also, what is the easiest way to transport a couple of finished blanks. I’m scared the boards will be dinged up while I transfer them.

Thanks

Kevin

PS, you might wonder why the hell I just dont ask them, well, they are never around to answer the phone so it’s hard to ask

  1. number one thing make sure your stringers are planed down (glasser hate stringers higher than foam they burn through glass while sanding)

  2. take it to 220 grit sanding screen should be acceptable

  3. i see glassers with blanks stacked up in the back of the van while picking up just masking taped togther 2, 3, 4 blanks stacked up

Dear KJ,

I have concerns about you not being able to reach the group that is suppose to be glassing your boards. Are they recommended? What if they aren’t around when you want to pick up your boards?

Howzit T, Hopefully they are more into glassing boards than answering the phone. I never answer the phone when resin working, I figure that's what the answering machine is for. Hows things in Virginia these days, say howzit to Austin for me. Aloha, kokua

That’s exactly what Mike says when I ask him about answering his phone. I’m working with the guys at Shoreline so I’m not to worried about them.

Small fishes I can fit in the passenger side front seat with on problemo. Just be careful going around bends… My 68 VW Van for all others.

180 or 220 on the final sanding. usually 180 if I paint it. make sure you have fin placements on your board.

At the glass shop…On the form/card make sure you fill out all the info as clear as possible… show where you want your logos, weight of glass, deck patch, type of fins, exact placement of leash plug, ect. Most glass shops I have delt with will not call if they have any questions about your info and they will put stuff where ever they want… I had one that changed fin placements on me even though they were clearly marked…

Good luck. Post your board when it’s finished…
