Priming laps

Searched the archives without much luck. 2nd glass job, 1st cutlap. I have laminated the bottom, and cut the lap. Should I prime the lap with a little laminating resin prior to continuing with the deck lam ? In the damascus video, Roger Brucker (aka) primes the free lap, I am wondering if I need to do the same on a cut lap.

Are you going to do the deck clear? If so it may be safer to lightly sand the lap line and prime the edge with a little lam resin(no wax added) using a 1" brush. This will fill the ridge and help prevent bubbles. If you are doing color work do not prime. This is just a little safety precaution for beginner glassers.Pro’s can usually get by without it.Have fun. Cleanlines,

I will be doing the deck clear. Thanks for the tip! Do you recommend another cutlap or should I do a freelap for the deck Lam ? Someone suggested using a roller on the cutlap to gently crush the edge into the foam. Has anyone had luck with this technique ?

Probably easier to free lap the deck.As for pressing down the lap I have never done it before. When a guy like Kokua and some of the others endorse it I know it will work though.I guess my only question would be “when” you actually press it.Is it pressed right after you cut the lap?Or can you press it the next day when the resin is cured.Kokua?? By the way Cleanlines, your work on the video was invaluable for me building my board. I don’t think that I could have glassed it without it (your tips work equally well on an epoxy board). Thanks!

Howzit Mr. Clean, I only press down the lap as a last resort after sanding the lap if it is still a little high. But I do use a roller to press down any little blobs of resin that may have gotten on the blank other then the lap areas. Especially if it’s a painted board. Aloha,Kokua

What kinda roller do you use, if I may ask?

Howzit newschool, It’s a small plastic roller that I think is used for wallpaper seams, roller is about 1 1/2 " wide.Aloha,Kokua

Great info gentlemen! I agree with danb, cleanlines did a great job in the video and it provided me with the confidence to make the jump to glassing. I’ll post some pics when she’s complete. -mv

Thanks to everyone here for their help, 1st cutlap/2nd glass job done. This is a gift for my Bro in Costa Rica. I’m pretty sure he’ll be as stoked as I am!

I guess the pictures did’nt get uploaded. I’ll try again.

Vey nice Vern.It blows my mind how good these backyard baords look.We gotta keep in mind to thank Mike for hosting this site. The archives of this site are priceless.RB

…for a roockie i really not recommend to pressing down the lap…there´s no major advantage and youll have a ´channel´ marked in the foam…for hidden this you need 1- a perfect scissors cut (free lap)if you dont do that you dont hide the marks cause the pinline is ´perfect´ and the cut not…2- a pinline
