Pro Glass job vs ameture back yard glass job

Hi folks

I finished a board at the weekend and was really happy with the end glassing. The glass job was smooth and seamless with no easily vissible laps. The board was thoroughly sanded to 240 and the glass looked very transparent. I was totally happy with the board.

However later that weekend I took a visit to the local surf shop and picked up a 6’2" from an internationally recognised brand and I was blown away with the glass job. What really sttod out was just how transparent the glass was. The spray job and white foam were gleaming.

This board was not glossed. It did not look like it had been sprayed with Acrylic. I could not see sanding marks.

What do these guys do that makes their board look so dam good.

…here are the secrets…

…finishing the shape with 240-280

…good paints (with good paint you dont need to dilute too much…)

…best and suitable resin (this is really important)

…good soft squeege and a couple of harder ones

…good light to see the tiny bubbles

…basting and sanding the laps

…starting sand (H. C.) with 100 instead 80 or 60

…soft edge pads in variable speed ang. sander (with this you dont have rail-onto-the-deck scratches)

…super soft pads

…some times double hot coats

…good skills

I totally know what your talking about, I went down to a surfshop, took a look at the boards, some were just your basic sand finish which I do, but others looked glossed but were not.

…test what I told you before…with all this tools…then youll see what you see in Surf shops…
