problem in the ride of my #3

I finished my #3 board, here is the link www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=217746;search_string=romeublue;#217746

and yesterday i tested it but i found a “problem” on it,its very hard to drop the wave, the board always seems that dont want to drop and speed…

I guess that i know were is the problem, i made a big glass-on plywood single fin and i think that i made it too big and too heavy…

What can i do now??Take it off and put a finbox??How do i do that??

Any onther option??

Thank you all guys!

Sorry about my englis.

From Portugal…

hey romeblue.

personaly i doubt that your fin would be to much of a problem. you said in your post you were a beginner

have you ridden many other boards to compare???

a narrow tail is a bit harder to catch small waves then a wide tail

just try a few more paddle strokes before you jump up wait until u feel the board moving

I took a look at the photos of your board. Nice job for only #3!

But the fin does look too big, too thick, too straight up and down (too little rake) and looks like it is way too far up.

I am just guessing as I can’t tell from the photo But a bigger problem may be that you have too much vee or roundness in the bottom tail area. Especially if the transition from the forward concave area to the vee is too abrupt. As the speed of the board increases water pressure increases toward the bottom tail area of the board. That in conjunction with the fin issues may be causing excess drag, right as you need to have the board releasing and jumping on to a plane.

Switch to a fin box and sand down the big hump you have from glassing on the fin and try hardening up the rails in the tail to improve the water’s release.

If you intend to improve your knowledge by experiencing, do what you fell you have to do. I’ll suggest a fin box in order to check different sizes and positions. Another good option is to ask an experienced surfer to ride it and give his impressions about the board. Good luck!

i agree with you bill about the vee and fin being to far forward

but the board should still be able to be surfed.

everything works to some degree.or so it would seem to me so far…

im sticking to flat bottom myself as fledgling board maker… i know i cant go to far wrong

cheers
