problem with 9 4B

In the process of cutting some extra tail rocker into my 9 4B I noticed a dip on the deck of the tail area on the right side of the board which left the tail area a little thin…like 3/4inch on the last 8inches of the rail. I was pissed that i didnt notice the dip on the deck earlier since theres no going back now. Has anyone else noticed that the 9 4B is flatter on one side of the deck/tail area or did i get a crappy blank? Also is 3/4 too thin on the rail area in the tail? Im thinking it might look funny with a 2 7/8 center thickness. Any sugestions?

J, yeah, that blank has a thin tail, gotta be carfull. 3/4" thick at the rail edge at 8" up from the tail? I don’t think thats to thin at all. I would just blend it out best you can as you round the top rail. Best to ya, Scott.

yep cutting mo’ rocker into close tollerance blanks is a dicey proposition allrighty ( pray for guidance ? ) I like just shaping that buggah lightly an when it gets real thin I make it 3/4’’ shorter… ambrose…heck whats an inch or two betwen friends

Well it seems to be okay. Didnt really have much room to add vee or roll in the tail but it foiled out okay.

This is why I stress to get the deck as perfectly straight as possible before going on to the bottom. It is what the rest of the shaping is referenced to. I like the 9’4"B, use it a lot, it may have been a poor glue-up on your blank as I don’t have problems with it. The 9’8"S and the 9’7"B are loaded with screw-ups and are a real bitch to work around if you don’t realized what is in store for you ahead of time

Thanks Jim, Yeah i didnt bother to fully check the deck ASSUMING everything was fine…silly me.

Jims tip on shaping in the deck roll was the most important trick I ever learned on longboards. It makes a world of difference. He taught me to do this before cutting the outline. It also makes cutting the planshape easier because you have less foam. The trick is multiple light passes with the planer.I watched his video and counted something like 20 or more passes that took all the bumps out. When you look down the deck of Jim’s boards they are perfect.Jim da Genious…thanks for all your help over the last the last 40 years. As a note I first met Jim when we were teenagers and from the first day all he wanted to do was build boards.Thats dedication.
