This’ll be my first board with epoxy instead of polyester, I’ve made kiteboards with epoxy but I didn’t bother with a gloss coat… any help here? I looked through the forums but couldn’t find anything specific enough. Will I still add the wax to the hotcoat, will there still be a hot “hotcoat” or will I just brush on the epoxy, wait until cure, then sand it, and add another thing of epoxy sand it, wetsand it, buff it, polish it…
I’m confused if I should do anything different then what I did with polyester or not.
it needs no wax because it doesn’t cure tacky. the “hotcoat” is just another layer of resin to fill the weave of the lam. and the “glosscoat” is just another layer of the same resin on top of the hotcoat to give it some depth which supposedly allows for a better polish. the only thing you should be mixing in there besides resin and hardener is Additive F at 2mL per oz. of hardener (if you’re using RR epoxy)
Alright, thanks for that, wasn’t sure if it’d look right for a surfboard, especially since the kiteboards I make are all Carbon fiber and you can’t really tell if it’s really glossy or not.
I just remember adding the wax to the Polyester to get the glosscoat and hotcoat, at least that’s what I did.
I was always scared to try Epoxy, but after doing a few kiteboards I’m comfortable with it.
