Problem with white spots in weave...4 oz cap

I have a great suspicion that there’s nothing I can do about it, but here goes…I did a resin swirl on my latest board and thought I’d give Gene Cooper’s extra 4 oz filler method a try. So, I’m supposed to sand down into the 4 oz layer until smooth just like I would a hotcoat. The only problem is the little white spots that begin to show up in the weave of the 4 oz cloth. I could probably sand down a little deeper before hitting the lam, but it just seems to get worse. Please help if possible. If not, let me know that I’m screwed and I’ll gloss on about my merry way.

Thanks,

Seay

Depends exactly what you mean by “little white spots”…

Pinholes you should fill with gloss squeegeed into the 4 oz.

Styrene should hide normal sanding marks of white. Lacking that, brush a little resin atop the “white” and see if it disappears. If it don’t, deal with it.

Howzit SeayWalker, Are those white spots showing up as you sand the weave? if so it's just the sanding dust and you can blow most of it off with a compressor. What you can do for any spots left is use some styrene on them just before you do the next step which I'm not sure what you are going to do. will you be laying on the 4oz cloth or hot coating. No worries if you plan to do some finishing coat: spray or gloss. Just blow some air to get all the dust out, then the resin or varnish or whatever will make those “white spots” disappear. Just the same if you had sanded a bit too much in a regularly glassed board.
