problems with hotcoats

hello. I am having a problem with my hotcoats and I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me. Everytime I hotcoat the deck I do the standard hot coat procedure pour the resin on end to end and cover it with a brush. Then I go side to side to get rid of extra resin, then I go end to end to level out the hotcoat. After it sits for a minute the hotcoat starts to rinkle. It gets hundreds of rinkles all over the board. First I though I was putting the hotcoat on too thick so the last board I did it out nice and thin and it still started to rinkle. Would putting too much styrene make the resin real runny and make the deck rinkle up? The board isn’t getting contaminents on it because I’m using suncure so their is nothing to just contaminate the top of the board. For my suncure hotcoat I mix suncure lam with a bit of wax styrene and catalize it normal (half quart @ 15cc)and let it sit for 20 min to kick and smooth out, then I walk it into the sun. With suncure hotcoating you need to put a bit more wax styrene in it so the wax will rise. What am I doing wrong??? Help please

First, if your using suncure you don’t need to us catalyst. I think you may be producing way to much heat. Also, make sure that you have no air movement while your hot coating. good luck.

I use uv resin for hot coats but I shoot them like it’s not uv resin. You might not be mixing the s.a. into the resin enough,or you could be adding to much s.a.,this could cause the problem you’re having. I don’t like adding the extra s.a. because it leaves a thinner hot coat. Try not adding the extra s.a., shoot your hot coat, let it set for 20 mins. to 30 mins., then expose it to sun or uv lights. After 15 or 20 mins.exposed to uv it will be hard enough for your next step. This is the procedure I use and I have had no problems so far. Aloha, Kokua

I use uv resin for hot coats but I shoot them like it’s not uv resin…Hey Kokua, does this mean that you put catalyst in your hotcoat?

Thanks for the advice. I thought it might be from thinning it out too much causing it to slide on the deck and rinkle. And to Scotts answer yes put catalyst in the suncure. The catalyst will cure the resin on the floor so its not always wet and will cure anything that might not have cured from the sun.

Yes I add catalyst ( 15 cc’s ) it works better that way. I tried doing it without a couple of times and I didn’t like the way they came out. Just shoot it like a normal hot coat, wait 20 to 30 min. then put it in the sun to make it really hard, it comes out great and you’re ready for the next step. Aloha, Kokua

The catalyst will cure the resin on the floor so > its not always wet and will cure anything that might not have cured from > the sun. To cure any uv resin left on the floor I put my uv lights in glassing room fixtures for a while and that will do the trick. Just make sure there’s no open uv resin that will also harden.Aloha, Kokua

Wow, cool!!! Thanks, I’ll try it next board.
