ok board number 7 is for a good friend Tobin. Tobin usually gets his board from Pete at atlantic in devon but after seeing my latest he wants one of mine. stoked.
as far as what to shape him ill put forward my thinking and hope you’ll all chip in and help me out.
he is 6’1" and weighs 13-13.5 stone when fit! lol he’ll love that. been surfing for a long time, maybe 10yrs plus
currently he has a 9’6 noserider with a heavy glass job but loads of foam and a big wingnut 10" fin, he loves this board but in bigger surf he has to drop knee turn on dropping in. he also has a 9’1 performance longboard which he loves but its taking him a bit to get fully wired after the log. he also has an egg, i think its about 8ft but he never really likes it and i think its too close in size to the others to make him want to take it out.
i want to shape him a shorter board so he can start carving a little more but i know i need to leave loads of foam as he is a, big and b, used to his log and the ease of paddling.
i think it will still need to be 8ft but im thinking of something similar to the mctavish g2, not too much nose rocker but a kick in the tail rocker, single fairly deep concave running through to flat infront of the fins, maybe channeled through the fins?
as far as fins im thinking probox five fin setup so he can ride it twin, thruster, quad or five. hoping handshaper pipes in on this as i love his quad gun! plus i think i need some probox of you Robin as Adam at Trim hasnt got back to me with prices or details yet. has the container landed with him yet?

Hi surfingdog, This is Larry at ProBox, Robin will come on later if he sees this. He’s off Island but checks his emails and Sways. Yes the container did arrive to Adam awhile back. I will forward this thread to him. Thanks for you support. Mahalo,Larry

Aloha surfingdog:
I agree that a five fin setup is a good choice. Lately I have been doing number of guns with a five setup. They really give the surfer a lot of choices. Although my experience is that once people try the quad they almost never use the thruster setup.
I see that Larry has answered the question about Adam, but if you still need something please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Also if you need any help with the layout of the fins just let me know and I will be more than happy to provide layout details.
I have attached a photo of a recent board that was designed around similar constraints and has a five fin setup. This board is 8’ 6" and was also fairly thick to maximize the float and paddle. I also did a 9’ 6" version for the same customer.
The McTavish is a good board to look at for inspiration!

Aloha Robin,
thanks for the advice, im hoping to hear from adam on monday so ill keep you posted. i think i will need a bit of advice on this one as i really want to impress him with this board.
that 8’6 looks perfect, i love seeing your boards. im struggling to find rocker dimensions for this style of board, any chance you could throw me some figures so i can work out which blank to order? im thinking along the lines of the US Blanks 803H 3/16’’ but not sure if i need to go a bit bigger to fit in the kicked tail rocker like the g2.
what do you think?
cheers

I’m on the road at the moment but when I get back home I could send you some rocker details.
What is the actual length of the board going to be?
Sounds like the blank choice is going to be dictated by the thickness you need to get, or maybe the width. For this type of board when I have used a US Blanks blank I have always used the 8’ 1" EA blank as it has a very good rocker right off the bat, maybe with a little more tail rocker. Whereas the one you are looking at is going to have a completely new nose rocker bent into it as it does not have a nose rocker anywhere near what would be needed for a gun.
Can you get US Blanks with a custom rocker?
If you need the width and thickness from the 8’ 3"H I would have them glue it up with the 8’ 1" EA nose rocker and leave the existing tail rocker as that would work out pretty good if you want the kicked tail.
If you decide to use the 8’ 1" EA you might want to get about a 1/2" more tail rocker in the tail if you want to flip it a little more. I typically just shape the rocker in when I have used this blank, but you might need to preserve the thickness for your customer.
The board in the photo used an Ice9 8’ 6" Hybrid blank.
Hope this helps!

Aloha Robin, hope your having a fun trip.
im aiming for an 8ft board for him, and looking at similar numbers to the g2 which is 21" wide and 2 7/8" thick. i dont know why i didnt look at this blank straight off! the seabase site does advertise custom rockers available but im imaging getting one would take too long for this board. this might also mean sacrificing a little thickness in the tail like you said but im sure seabase imports their foam rather than blowing it for USblanks so im stuck with the standards.
ok so the 8’1 EA is the blank, if you could send through rocker info when you get back that would be much appreciated.
thanks
Mark
Aloha surfingdog:
If you use that blank all you need to do is shape in an extra 1/2" of rocker on each end and I think you are good to go. For the tail put the 1/2" in the last 10", in the nose the last 6 - 8" to give it a little more flip. This is very close to what I used although I might have put a 1/4" more in the nose.
Good luck!

aloha Robin,
ive just got off the phone with the Tobin and he’s really pushing me to go 8’6" with this one, if i choose the usblanks ea806 it has a touch more rocker in nose and tail, would i still want to increase it slightly more or leave as is?
thanks in advance.
oh also ive still not heard back from adam, could you work a price out for me for 2 sets of boxes (both 5 finners) i dont need the router bit or templates as ive kept them from last time. also if you could recomend fin sizes that would be great
