ProBox install into a Hollow Wood Board...

Has anyone here done a Probox install in a hollow wood board?

I was thinking of putting 2# EPS into the tail of the board to install the boxes into after the board has been glassed.

Is there a better way?

Thanks

Rick

some people use some lightweight (scrap) wood in the same way you’ve described foam.

since there’s not foam throughout, I wonder how strong those inserts would be, even with

adhesives attaching them to the deck/hull and epoxy saturated for the boxes…

ScottG over at the grainsurf forum did it that way

I couldn’t tell you the difference in strength of eps vs wood for the fin boxes but I’d probably use scrap wood as afoaf said… after all the work it takes to build a hws it’d suck if it got messed up because of the fin boxes, but that’s just me…

Best wishes,

I haven’t finished my board yet, but I installed extra bracing and wood where I plan to have my fin box.

I don’t like to cut out big sections after the skins go on, so I install the fin support before the skins go on.

You might be able to insert small pieces of wood through the holes you route for the boxes. Glue them to the inside top and bottom. As long as you have enough for the boxes to fit into, it should work. Then reroute the added support for the proboxes.

I’ve done it a couple different ways…

The first was a retrofit on a one of my older boards…I routered through the deck into the hollow…Next I got some spray foam, the stuff in an aerosol can used for insulation, and shot some into where the fin boxes would go…Let to set up overnight, then re-routered…Install boxes, etc…

On the other board I did the install of balsa blocking on the inside of the board before the deck was installed…Similar to what the others have said…

rickrickrick, I think silly is the guy to ask about installing ProBox into a compsand board. Like the stuff you are doing, keep the STOKE moving my friend! Mahalo,Larry

Thanks everyone!

Hey Paul,

Just a quick question if you don’t mind.

I just glued on the deck to the framing.

I have ribs every 12 inches. The deck is 1/8th inch poplar hardwood and glassed with 6oz and epoxy.

When pushing down on the deck in between the ribs, the deck compresses a bit.

Is this something I should worry about?

Or will things stiffen up later in the process?

Thanks.

Rick.

It will stiffen up after the deck is glassed…

Thanks Paul
