public opinion on a surfboard design

I am thinking of having built a 8’0’’ neutral shaped egg[single fin]18’‘nose-22.5w.p.-16tail’'.OK this is where it gets interesting.I want to ride it with a winged keel [starfin].The rails in the tail will have a heavy chine or bevel like the rail used on Tom Morey’s swizzle[a.k.a.]afterburners.I thinking that they may help a wide tail single fin shape hold in better. If anyone has given something along these lines some consideration or has tried somthing like this I would welcome your opinons or feedback. Thanks

I’ve always found Star fins to hold reasonably well without any help from rail shape. Cheyne Horan’s boards had increadibly thick tails and he was riding those in HI. Regardless, the Star fin does offer better drive than the standard single and I have used them on funboards. Worked great.

speaking only from what I have read here at Swaylocks (have not ridden an egg or a star fin), it seems that most of the egg riderson the site ride them with a flex fin for out of the turn drive and down line speed off the front foot.

With an 8 foot egg board and a single fin, most people would want help with hold on steeper stuff, and turning.

One approach to improving turning is tail vee. You shift back and to the side, and the vee will help you turn.

Another approach for drive is a drivier fin. I make a finbox that is drivier than any single fin (and it works GREAT in an 8 ft egg), but flex fins or a Starfin is also working in the right direction.

For hold on steeper stuff, you will find harder rails hold less well with a single. They provide lift, and tend to push the single fin out when the going gets rough. You cannot track a steep wave face as well without a rail fin, but a softer rail helps a single along. Longer fins help, a little.

HTH.

Thanks everyone for the feedback,it was very helpful. I plan to go ahead with the winged keel fin ,afterburner tail rail combo. the board will be a shaped epoxy board.I have a local board builder with the experience in this area of construction and design willing to tackle it.Thanks again ,Nicko
