Ask for JIM!
If you glass the board you shape with him he will not charge you for the bay. There is a community bay there.
They do nice glass work as well or you can PM me and I might let you use a bay in our factory in Costa Mesa?
thanks
i shape everything outta there
i love those guys
would you be able to give me a price?
Pretty Standard nowadays: If you glass it there its free.
But I’m not sure if that is extended to those who are raw
beginners. I’d say if you have a few or more boards under
your belt and can finish a board the same day as you start,
then your in like Flynn/Flint.

Otis:
You hit the nail on the head.
Shredthegnar:
Experienced shapers will power a shortboard in 1 to 2 hours and longboards 2 - 3 hours unless your Terry Martin then it’s 45 minutes.
A newbie can take all day. When the bay is tied up the guy’s in line will get pisssed. Plus you will take a lot of grieve. Just like when you started surfing and were a full barney. Shaping is the same way. You will be the kook in the factory. If you glass your boards there the workers will be nice to you because the shop needs the work. If you don’t glass the board in the shop you will suffer grieve. Shop owners pay rent, payroll, utilities and so on. Why would they let you shape a board then take it home to glass? It’s not worth anybodies time to rent out a bay for ten bucks an hour? The money made in a real shaping bay doesn’t warrant renting it out. When I started shaping the shop owner kicked me out after I shaped about 6 boards and told me to beat it (he was a friend). He had a machine and I was handshaping from start to finish. If I had them cut there I would have been able to stay. I went to a glass shop and shaped about 5 - 7 boards a week and had them glassed there as well. In return I had use of the community bay. In time I was taking up 60% of that bay. Since I brought work to the shop I did not have to pay rent. I still took a lot of grieve and had to shake it off. Having my own bay now I realize what it takes to get to that point. It’s not even about money at that point it’s the principle and the discipline to master your craft.
There are dues to pay like in any trade!
Sure we all want to be nice, however the shops have to make a little money to keep the doors open. If you haven’t noticed the economy is not in a good cylce?
PURE GLASS is you best bet. See Jim and see what he can do for you and let him know what you will bring to the table?
cool, thanks for the info. I’m not a newb, Ive shaped about ten boards so I got an idea of what Im doing. Maybe I could run this by him: let me shape two boards and he glasses one and I get to glass the other.
A reasonable timetable for gaining control was set down for me many years by a shaping mentor. He said that in the course of your first 10 boards, you would start to figure out the basic mechanics and routine, and after 100 boards, you would begin to have some real control over the finished product. I soon found this guideline to be fairly accurate, and you should be prepared for the long haul after the initial “honeymoon” phase of the first board or two is over.
