Vaguely remember a logo shaped like a space capsule? Late sixties…there might still be an old wrapper under the backseat in my car.

Yep, seems that there wasn’t much else either. Waxmate, made in Encinitas/Leucadia area. I believe Rusty Miller was one of the founders of that company. “…hey kid you want a bar of the purple wax or would you rather have…the purple one?” Today there’s as many wax choices as there are long distance companies. That grape smell was good enough to eat, wasn’t it. The only problem with it was that there was so much oil (motor oil, literally) in it to soften it up, that if you left in in the car and it melted, you’d get a stain that was impossible to explain to the parents! Fortunately, we’ve moved on…(the good ole days aren’t always the best ole days).

Yea the smell…I found a small chunk and when I took a whiff it made me feel like I was a kid again (patchulie incense does the same thing …when I smell it I almost go into a drug flashback). It seems to like I read a little thing in Surfers Journal that said you could get the wax again…anybody know how to contact them?

That is the smell. Or the orange wax. It takes me back to carefree days…

I’m looking at an original 5 Summer Stories poster in my office. The predominant item is a big bar of purple wax being handed to you by the guy on the poster. Us old guys would love to smell that wax again. aloha, tom

It was a great smell and brings back some really good memories. Here is the skinny on who started Wax Research and what became of the company. Some of that bottomless trivia from Surfline. I have a bar that a friend etched a breaking wave on. It sits on a little stand as a work of art(?) Maybe I should have left it in the wrapper…

The smell of resin in a surf shop - with some exceptions, probably illegal these days, that would be nostalgic for any surfer over a certain age and a new experience for most. Made for some interesting late afternoon cash register conversations if the counter guy had been in the shop all day…

if you just want the color… one of my buddies melts a crayon in with some basecoat and drips it on, then uses topcoat over it. he constantly changes wax color, blue, green, purple, silver, gold… use name it… the big crayola box contains lots of potential -steve
