PVC stringer

Hi I´m a beginner shaper from Brazil, and I´m thinking about to do a PVC stringer to a new funboard (with 7'4"), and I wanna know if somebody has worked with this kind of stringer. How width it must be? What king of glue I may use? I´m thinking about 3/4" width and bonded to foam with epoxi adesive. It´s correct?

 Thank you for the answers!

I’m sorry, because I made a mistake.

When I said 3/4 inches, I was trying to say 3/8 inches.

Thank you.

ricardo i would use epoxy resin, but i havent used pvc yet but am considering this method too!

hi Ricardo,

when you say you want to use a PVC stringer I assume you talk about PVC foam (60 to 80kg/cubic meter). this has been done in sailboards and to have success you have to create a sandwich structure by laminating either side of the stringer. 3/8" is ok and the use of epoxi to laminate and glue the stringer in is fine. the advantage of PVC foam stringer is no twist and “width without weight” so 3/8" defeats the purpose a bit. there is no real advantage compared with wood (strength, weight) except you go wider (2x 3/8"??).

Ricardo,

Check the archives. The eps blanks we use have 1/8" stringers made of pvc that is used in the sign industry. I believe a glue called ROO glue is used for gluing up. You should be able to find some past discussions on this.

Where is a likely place to buy PVC sheets? I’ve heard sign makers?

The thread I referred to is in the archive from March 2, 2003 by Greg Loehr. The PVC material is 3 mm pvc in 4x8 sheets in various colors. Roo Glue is used for gluing up.

Can I use polyester resin with the pvc stringer, or just epoxi?

Thanx!

Can somebody answer me?

Thank you!

the PVC foam can handle polyester and epoxy. your choice depends on the kind of foam you use for the blank
