Quad fin size?

I am having quad [not twinzer]board being made and am going back and forth on the fin size.I am leaning toward single foiled 4.25 or 4.50 fins for the foward set and 4.0 or 4.25 double foil for the rear set.the tail is wide 16.25 ,wide point 22. nose 16 and length 7.0 .I go around 200 lbs. so I am thinking with the larger of the two .Any imput or feed back would be greatly appreciated. thank you

i got some great info on this thread nicko. hope it helps.

I was hoping to get a little more feed back on reccomended sizes. Did i come to the right place? Thanks Oldy ,I looked in the archive but I did not find too much on recommended size fins to use.Your help was appreciated.

nicko: yep sizes are here mate. even some templates you can print & enlarge using a photocopier to real size. lots of generous, helpful people shared lots of info.

hiya Nicko ,

I am loving my quad with four larger fins .

My board is only 5’8. I am around 5’10 , and I weigh 155lbs now [11 stone / 70kgs]

Being that your board is larger than mine , and you are heavier than me , try the bigger ones all round , and see how you like them . [How tall are you , by the way ?]

Also , IF you go for a fin system instead of glassons , you will be able to try all types of setups , and discover what suits you in different waves and conditions.

okay, I hope this is of some help to you …

cheers !

He Nicko,

Most guys I see riding quads effectively have lead fins with a little more lift than standard thruster rail fins. The trailers are generally smaller and double foiled. This kind of a set-up is very loose. Some guy like to put bigger fins on as trailers when the waves get a little bigger with smaller lead fins and surf with twinzer like set-up. This will open up the turning arc and if the board is configured in a way that this will work it can be a very good option. Others like fins with lots of cant and then there the guy that like high aspect lead fins and small trailers cause they want the board super loose.

Use you previous knowledge about how rail fins have worked for you the go figure how you want the board to act and experiment from there. There ain’t no equations. You gotta see how a give set-up feels to you and go from there.

No Worries, Rich

hi again Nicko !

just as an example [one of my current setups],

these ones are …

black fins … 4 1/2" base , 5 " depth , 1/2 " rake

yellow and white fins … 5 " base , 5 1/2 " depth , 1 " rake

I hope this helps !

(these are the ones I currently ride on my 5’8 "bushfire fish ")

Rich Halcyon , thanks , your advice as always is much appreciated !

cheers !

oops … sorry Rich !

Rich,

How does your quad ride? It was still being setup when I last visited.

Lance

Well mate that’s a bigger question than you might expect.

I’ve ridden my 8’5" Goin more than any of my other quads and it’s fine as long as the take off isn’t too critical. It’s very fast and maneuverable down the line but it’s a little heavy so it doesn’t have that initial burst on the take off I need at the place I surf most. I’m looking to sell it.

The 8’1" I shaped myself is a big wave board and I still sussing out the fin set up as I have the opportunity. (The tail of it is attached in a response on this thread.

Greg Tate and I did a trade and I have a 7’5" he shaped and glassed which I finished out and put the fin boxes in. I’ve only had it out twice so I’m still working on the fin set-up for it. I feels like it has some real potential. It’s Eps/epoxy and is thin and light.

The 6’8" Joey Thomas Twinzer is only happy in big surf and 8’0" Wil Jobson Twinzer is a total gas. But they don’t technically qualify as Quads.

There rest of my boards have center fins.

I’ll be sussing out fin set-ups again now that the rain is finally quiting. It’s been really stormy for the last month here. Too many microbes to swim with for me. Water looks good now. I had a fun session yesterday. Sharks was really going off – Got some screamin’ rides.

NO Worries, Rich

Chatted with Stretch yesterday (what a character!)

Thanks everyone for the help,I think I will go with the larger set. This board is being built locally but I am putting the capital together to order a Stretch quad soon also .I thought about asking the people at Stretch surfboards but i think it would be in bad taste to ask them to suggest fins for someone elses quad.I think I will talk to my shaper also,He [Paul Baymore]seems to be very familar with the design also. But thanks again everyone at Swaylocks ,other opinions are always helpful and more brains are better than one.
