quad or twin on big fish

Having a big fish based on the Pat Ryan "Kingfish ‘’ Stinger made.Dimensions 7’2’‘,16’’ , 22.25’‘,15.5’‘,stinger starts 18.5’’ from swallow tail. The Pat Ryan set up is a twin fin with trailer but i was wondering if there would be advantages of a quad? I have done a check in archives to no effect .If i put the option of a quad i would still have a centre box and my thoughts are we could be getting a bit heavy back there. So i am thinking its one or the other.Bigger question ,do quads work with stingers or is it a mutation too far?

Nothing personal MP,

But you’re going to have a heck of a time riding it backside.Trush me, I built several twin/tri/quad stingers in the past, starting in 76’.Great frontside board, and even cuts back great.

Surfing them backside is a whole nother world.Kinda like steering a melting popsicle down a steep wet street. Lots of spinny and slippy.

Don’t let me discourage you.Maybe your style or conditions will blend with the design.

Just go light footed at first.I know that a heavy backfoot will only cause you problems with this design.Herb

hi Herb

Thanks for the advice,i have been warned. The beast is shaped so i will at least get the full experience first hand . At least i can blame my poor backhand on the board at the moment i have know such excuse.Would the quad work the least worst ?

Go Quad,it should help,or even a 5 finners like Griff’s set-ups.

(You could make it a combo board so it can be ridden in either,tri/quad/5.)

Let us know how it goes. Herb

You might consider the twinzer option. I have found that setup loose in a bigger fish. It will require concaves and a low tail rocker. However you can put standard quad fins in for down the line speed & tubes.

thanks Herb i am thinking of the combo.Where would you start leading fin .on pictures i have twin starts around stinger ,would this be best place to start for quad ? stinger starts 18.5’’ from tail.

12" up from the tips of the tail on the trailing edge of the fronts and 6" on the rears.

If you use Lockbox or Red-X it will give you more versatility.Herb

the Kingfish has a lot of V in the tail, something you should consider.

I’m with Herb on the center fin box tho…not that you can’t put one in later…

I gather then that V is no go.Shape it out to flat or put a concave in it ?can’t find a thread on this but maybe some one can direct me.Thanks Bert for the placement advice.

Thought you would like to see this option from Probox in the twinzer set up. This Board can also be set up to use as a regular quad, or a twin fin. Not to mention is can have the cants adjusted from 0 to 8 degrees in two degree incriments should the need arise.

What about making such a board asymmetrical? Optimize the rail and outline for your backside ride?

I just installed a probox quad system, with fins by Robil Mair, I’m really impressed by everything about the system, I’ll be my box of choice in future. The fins are excellent and the service second to none.

That twinzer setup looks nice solo

I’VE THOUGHT OF IT BUT …

…I think it would hinder the frontside rail to rail transitions.

…Here’s one for you though…My Master shaper Rick McHale built a swallow stinger without the wings…YOU SAID WHAT !!!

Back in the olden days steps were put on the stingers. They ran from wing to wing, tranverse. The straight across steps would cause a busted board, but Rick and Les came up with and angled step. Thus a stepped sting without the stinger wings.

I rode it several times and it rode fantastic w/o the triditional outline hang-ups.Herb
