quad / twin convertible

So I rode Shwuz’s carbon railed twin and had some really fun sessions on it…

Then I rode, for 3 wonderful sessions, my diamond tailed t-flex.  I set it up with a Griffin 5 fin set up, but with a narrow tail.  As a 5 fin it felt stiff.  Fortunately I made some quad trailers and tried it as a quad.  I loved it- fast and really loose.  Then the board had its untimely demise…

So now I’m brainstorming my next board…

I’d love a twin and a quad, but was kind of thinking them uncompatible.  Then I saw this-

He’s holding a twin, but it’s got trailer boxes, so I’m thinking it’s possible to have both.

Does anybody have any good experiences with a twin/quad convertible?

I searched the archives… you know how that goes.  My head was spinning from an overload of info, without relly getting what I needed…

LLilibel, I just done 4 boards ( twinnies ), but I'm puttin removable leaders in front of the normal twin set-up........I think I was influenced here by Herb Spitzers small " super-chargers" , although they won't be that small. If I remove the smaller leaders, it's just a normal twin-fin. They will be glassed soon as I get time.

My last three personals have been 3-4-5 setups. I’ve ridden them as thrusters, quads, and twins with and without trailers. The twin with trailer setup works very well, so you might keep the fifth box in mind when setting up your fin system. The trailer fin seems to give the board that little bit of drive that twins sometimes lack (especially a convertible where the fins aren’t really setup like a true twin would be).

I have a quad that i surf with very small rears, like superchargers, but in the back, and occy fins up front. feels a lot like a twin to me. Im used to twins, so it feels better to surf with that setup. I just surfed it in some head high low tide waves and it held in great, so slip, and was super responsive. If you want to see them, they're in a thread called "new board, 6'6'' not a fish".

Keen to see the convertible if you make one.

maybe set up the boxes for a quad, and make custom twin fins (im assuming you were going to make bamboo fins) with the tabs further forward… this and the adjustability of probox should make it work, though youre going to have to comprimise with how far the trailing edge is in from the rail…  what placements are you thinking you would want for a twin fin or for a quad?

I was going to go with the Griff 5 minus the center fin, which is what was on the pendoed diamond tail, fronts 10-3/4 up 1-1/8" off the rail, 1/4" toe, 8 degrees cant,

rears 5-1/4" up, 1-1/16" off the rail, 1/8" toe 8 degrees cant.  I didn’t measure Shwuz’s twin but I’m thinking they were further  forward.  Good idea though.  With Probox I could split the difference and move the tabs accordingly.
