question about concaves

When shaping a concave into a shortboard shoud the concave change the shape of the rocker i.e. make it straighter or should it follow the same curve?

I tend to follow the curve of the board. http://www.ancientartsurfboards.com

I thought that concaves are supposed to flatten out an area of the rocker so the water can flow through faster?

I do use concaves to reduce bottom curve especially between the fins. They also add significant drive.

ok so concaves is used to straighten out the rocker to increase waterflow through the concave area

Jason, When Ive shaped concaves, my boards essentially had two rockers... with the flatter-curved of the two, always running down through the concaves. The concaves usually fed into, were defined by, and spilled out across the higher bordering areas which had more rocker. The concaves Ive used have been like generators… lots of extra horsepower. ok, thanks guys i just needed some clarification there

What will concaves, hulls & channels do for hybrids & fishes that are over 7’in length & 21" plus wide?

i’ve put single to double concaves in boards up to 9-0 (longboard shapes), that had extra tail rocker put in at the blank shop. my thinking is the straighter area (achieved by the concave) gives you an accelerator and the curve of the rail (where your weight is when turning) gives you a nice arc to turn off of. so essentially, it does the same thing for bigger boards as it does for shortboards. there’s my nickel’s worth…

Allen… exactly right!

Be careful with rocker. I have an 8,3 that tends to suck to the face of the wave at high speeds, which makes turning harder. It definetly adds speed to the board (a big wave, wide gun), but it literally locks in, and I don’t like that. When I surf sixty foot Jaws, I need to be able to make quick moves. Okay, when I surf eight foot Swamis I need to make quick moves. But concave helps a noserider, and helps paddling on a shortboard.
