I finished shaping my board a while ago, but haven’t gotten it glassed yet. Is there are certain amount of time I need to do this by, or will the blank be ruined if I wait too long? Not sure what the air will do to the skinned blank and the foam. Any help would be appreciated!
couldn’t tell you the shelf life of a blank. I’ve had blanks sit over the winter in new england coldness. I wrap in a trash bag to keep dust off and made sure its in a dry place. No probelms. A moist area would be a bad idea. Before you glass it maybe do a soft re-sand if it’s gotten dirty or off-colored and make sure you blow it off before you glass.
Hi DaisyDrew, It’s like a loaf of bread, keep in a cool, dry place or it will start to mold! Kidding, about the mold, but it will eventually begin to yellow. If that happens, you’ve got another sanding job on your hands. I recently read a thread about this. One person said that it will delay the yellowing if wraped in black plastic (trash bag). Everyone one said that heat and the sun create the worst problems. How long 'til you’re able to glass it?
Would it be horrible if I said it’s been sitting in my closed garage for about a year?! I know, I know…I just never got around to finishing it b/c I wasn’t going to trust myself to glass it. The foam still feels alright, but it definitely has the yellowy color. I was going to get it glassed soon, FINALLY, definitely in the next few weeks, but only if it’s worth it (i.e. if the blank hasn’t gotten gone to crap.)
Personally, I would have a really hard time tossing out a piece of foam. I’ve done a few re-shaped boards (peeled the glass off old ones, re-shape, and re-glass) and they took resin and haven’t had any delam problems even two years later. I’ve heard of exposed foam “gassing off” or something like that which seems to suggest that it losses buoyancy but I don’t really know. It seems that if the weight to volume ratio remained the same then the bouyancy would too. I dunno. Maybe an expert will chime in on this thread and help us all out.
At the very least, I would use the foam to work on my planner technique. Mine could use a little work.
