question about SUP boards

hey guys im thinking about getting into SUP b/c im going to college next year and the school is on this real big lake. But, im new to SUP so i have a few questions. What are the differences other than the length of the board b/w a longboard ans a SUP board? im low on money so i dont wanna drop $1000 on a SUP board. could i use a longer longboard as a SUP board? thanks, Cam

longer, wider, thicker. basically so you can stand up on it. for a lake board you don’t need anything fancy. something that you can stand up on is basically all you need. flat bottom, a little v in the nose to cut the chop and a single fin.

You could use an old windsurf board, I,m sure u could find one cheap. Last year I bought an oxbow 11’ sup with an oxbow 2 piece paddle for about $1100.00 brand new. It is eps construction. Although I find it dings pretty easily it isn’t a bad board, it paddles real well and surfs pretty good too. You just have to be careful moving it around, thats how I got all my dings. It is probably the cheapest one you will find, and I think it is well worth it.

alright thanks a bunch. Now im stuck with the problem of finding a blank. I can get blanks through a friend who shapes and was wondering which of these you guys would reccomend. keep in mind that im gonna be takin it to college so i’d like a board on the smaller end, i.e. not like 12’ but like smaller than 10’. here’s a list of blanks that i compiled from a few manufacturers catalogs. I put down some shorter ones b/c i figured they’d be cheaper than a SUP blank. but i;ll let you guys reccomend which ones b/c yall are the more experienced shapers and know what a SUP needs.

Although I don’t know them, I would go with either the US Blanks 10’10"T or the King Mac 10’3" SUP. You’re looking for something more than 30" in width and about 5" in thickness. The first two SUPs I made were shaped out of blanks in the 27" width range and 4" thickness, and, although very wide in the tail, they were not easy to stand up on.

Balsa is right, you are going to want around 29" to 30" in width and at least 4" in thickness after shaping (they vary based on experience weight and other factors). Keep in mind that the board will not float as well in fresh water as in the ocean.

There are some other things to consider before you make your decision, such as:

Do you have any experience on one? If so, What are the dims of the smallest one you have ridden?

Will you be wearing a wetsuit or protective clothing? (added weight)

Do you want to keep your feet dry?

alright cool. oh ok.

i dont have any experience on a SUP. i’ll probably be wearing boardshorts and a shirts and a hat… nothing heavy like a wetsuit. and im not worried about gettin my feet wet. also, i might be wearing a springsuit if the water is cold on the lake…
