I just tuck them in with no extra resin added. Perhaps you could focus your attention at getting skilled at grinding that first lap without hurting the foam…
…I use an air-powered mini grinder with a 2-inch diameter sanding disc. You could easily do the job with decent sandpaper by hand. White P-80 Mirka is the paper of choice. Source it from furniture makers or from online surf supply places.
You can use some of this paper glued to a small hardblock and carefully, slowly start to sand down your laps (ie. learn how and learn what you need to do to make your laps better).
You can use Mirka by hand and a little bit of fresh acetone (melts the resin component away) to sand the lap even more. You’d be surprised how little sanding you need to get the job done.
Once you learn this skill, your board building skills will go up a notch and it will be readily apparent in your finished product. HTH.
Howzit pauluk, Which laps are you basting, I don’t baste the lap after laming the bottom since I squeegee the excess resin in the laps on to the foam. I have not had any problems as far as discoloration from basting, maybe you are using to much resin. Aloha,Kokua

Instead of basting, try this method…take a popsicle stick and with the round edge press it against the very edge of the lap cloth and then press the cloth edge into the foam. You need only press it down about 1/16" into the foam. No sanding needed!!!
this works great for cutlpas. If your free laps are cut vvery clean then it would work as well.
