Question for Tom Sterne

Hey Tom, gotta a question for you regarding your supercharged Twins you posted. You being on the Gulf, I imagine we are surfing similar waves, me doing most of mine in NE FL, less than classic beachbreak windswell with the odd good day here and there and of course the odd trip abroad for some good waves. Anyway… getting to the point, how do those twins perform? What type of waves do they like best? How do they compare to say a tri with superchargers? I really like the look of those boards! When I can, I am planning on a fish-type as my next shape. I was wondering about the supercharged twin vs. a regular twin with a trailer? Thanks ahead of time for your input!

Ed: I like them in the steeper, hollower waves we get here. As you can see by the planshapes, they float well, are good for early entry (read:compete with my longboard brethren) and the flat rocker is the ticket to coming from behind the peak on those quick dumping type walls. Like most twins they aren’t very forgiving in pivoting cutbacks or vertical situations. Herb’s superchargers tend to refine the turns of the twin and smooth out and refine the way the twins handle. I’ve made a couple of twins with the trailer option, most of the serious A/B testing done on those favored the twins alone or the twins with the superchargers. I don’t have any idea how large you are going to go with yours but consider the added volume when you set out to calculate the length. Shorter you can go the more fun they are, especially if you regularly come on and off of a longboard as I do. Still tuning fins and such but I’ve built several for friends and they really are adaptable for many people who thought that they would never get back on a sub-seven footer again. **the 6’2"C, 7’3", 7’11"R blanks are good starting points, pay attention to the rocker adjustments. **the 6’2"C, 7’3", 7’11"R blanks are good starting points, > pay attention to the rocker adjustments.>>> Tom I would like to do one outta the 6’2c, or was thinking a 6’6-6’8 outta 7’3. Do you go with the natural rocker? I figured the rocker for the fishy shape is somewhat flatter than current trends. I noticed the natural rocker on the 7’3 is fairly low. Or if order with the Eaton bend is more nose and less tail. I would rather not have to do manual adjustments with my planer if I can get out of it. Also with the template being so wide, do you put in vee into the bottom or keep it fairly flat? Is it leading into the fins or further up? Really appericate your input here. Also anyone else feel free to add your two cents.

Thanks ahead of time > for your input!..I get a lot of good input from people like T.S. ,and others in the Supercharger test group.I personally prefer a thruster set-up with my smaller, tipped forward model chargers. The TwinSuperchargers, are larger to accomidate larger thruster side fins, and a variety of medium twins…There are also 2 Rusty C-5 TEMPLATES you could play with as well,a twinzer template out there.Herb

Ed: The 6’2"C could be ordered with even less rocker in the nose. I’ve not used the 7’3" yet, but just ordered one with N rocker and another with the Eaton specs. I’ve put a bit of concave on both sides of the stringer on my shorter ones. Say from 30" up from tail that fades into the area between the fins. Hope that helps. Wish we could get some others to add to this, the more input on what has been tried and what is working the better. Ed, if you can, put a rocker stick on a 7’3" and check the rocker on the blank at the size you want your board to be. This way you will know for sure what you have to work with and were you need to start the adjustments, if needed. My guess would be a plus nose over natural for room to give you a beak nose and a little bit of a progressive curve under the nose.I hope this helps, Scott.

Thanks guys, I think I will order both size blanks and see what I can come up with. Hopefully the results will warrant posting a picture when the work is done. Thanks again. ed
