Question on Skil 100

Good Morning.

I have noticed that recently while shaping when I let my finger off my planer, it comes to a stop with a bit of a squeak that it has never had. Any ideas?

Good place to sharpen blades in North County San Diego?

Jerzag

Whole thing is about to $hit the bed. Better sell it to me for $20 before it dies. I have nothing useful to add, but if it was me I’d open it up and inspect the bearings.

Sounds like bearings. To check cutterhead run it for 3 minutes and touch he casing on each side where the bearings are installed. If one side feel hot that’s your problem. It’s an easy fix.

WD 40 on everything that moves.

i try and stay away from WD40…

i recommend TRI-FLOW…Barnfield probably know what it is.

Tim is the best shaper in Southern California by far! Listen to him.

Sometimes it is the belt rubbing against the drum cover plate. Take off the belt guard and look for black wear. Also, remove one of the cover plates (motor or cutter) and check the bearing. If it’s bad, always replace them all as a set. The bearings are sealed, and they can’t be lubricated. There is nothing in the cutter drum or armature that needs lubrication anyhow since both shafts float on bearings. The only lubrication points are the grooves for the front shoe, and the depth pivot screw inside the shoe area. Contact Tool Depot in Encinitas for blade sharpening 760-943-9120.

BTW, you can damage the motor by spraying any lubricant in it. These tools are antiques (like some of us), and the motor windings are insulated with varnish that was applied in the 60’s which is now turning to dust on many Skil’s I’ve seen. Spraying WD-40 or the like in there will hasten the process. It is also flammable; turn off your lights and watch the sparks in the brushes.

Thanks for the info. till now, I’ve just been using it. I think its high time to work on it.

Thanks again
