I’m new to Swaylocks, and would like to say hi to everyone! I’m Jaclyn, from the great east coast, and a student finishing up my last semester in Boulder, CO. Anyways, I’m currently writing a plan for a start-up surfboard manufacturing company, which I must say is very fun, but also very stressful! I’m currently looking for volunteers to take a short questionnaire I put together to gather further research. I don’t know the best method to do so, so if you’d be willing to help you could respond to this post or email me and I can attached the questionnaire to an email. If you have a better idea, I’d love to hear it! It is not easy to find surfers out here in Colorado, so I hope a handful of you guys and gals can help me out. If you would like to know anything else about my project please ask. Thank you!

Yes

  1. Do you have a favorite surfboard brand? If yes, what is it?
I hear Jim Phillips makes mean sticks. Mean as in good / awesome.
  1. Did you know that the manufacturing process of surfboards is toxic to shapers and pollutes our environment?
Loaded question. Depends on what type of manufacturing process and the place where they are at, and the people who make them.
  1. Recently surfboard manufacturers have been using ‘greener’ products in constructing their surfboards, have you recently purchased one of these boards? Why or why not?
Sister, if it was available, I would. Price not a factor in answering.
  1. Would you be interested in purchasing a surfboard that was 100% non-toxic and doesn’t pollute our environment during its manufacturing process?
Yes.
  1. What features would a non-toxic/non-polluting board need for you to buy it?
Same feel as polyurethane boards. But with a the 'pop' of an epoxy one.
  1. Do you think other surfers would buy a surfboard that is non-toxic and non-polluting with your specified features?
Heck YES!
  1. Would you pay a premium for a non-toxic/non-polluting surfboard with your specified features? If yes, how much of a premium?
Possibly. $200 max over the price of standard US made board (not Rusty or CI prices they are through the roof)
  1. What are reasons to not buy a non-toxic/non-polluting surfboard?
1. They surf like junk

  1. They are fragile

  2. Supremely expensive (like 300% mark up or something)

Brands have no soul. Anyone that surfs a branded surfboard is a paying homage to consumerism and therefore, is a consumer whore. Except if it has a local shaper's name as the brand, then it has more soul than James Brown and Ray Charles put together.
  1. Did you know that the manufacturing process of surfboards is toxic to shapers and pollutes our environment?
Tell that to the mice and rats, feral cats (not Daves), and the bugs. I pulled out a rat swimming in the open acetone bucket. Thing bit me, but acetone is good for preventing rabies. No wonder Nancy was laughing as I yelled at her to keep a lid on it. I was moving yellowed blanks sitting for a few months and big Jerusalem cricket the size of my hand fell on my head. Good thing no one was there to hear me scream like a little girl.

The only green surfboard is when Mike mixes the blue and yellow tint right. We prefer to have him as our pinliner (no relation to TFAD).

Yes I am interested in curing cancer, preventing world hunger, finding an AIDS vaccine, stop war, granting people superpowers, I'll take flying and breathing underwater. And flying must be fast. I'd like a little bit of time travel, faster than the speed of light warp travel, oh yeah, fountain of youth yes. And a bag that always weighs 5 lbs but you can put anything into it and it won't change the dimensions or weight.

Magic* boards. I only ride magic boards. And I ain't talking about David Copperfield. He can't surf.

*boards that ride really well, do any move your mind thinks of, feels not like a board but like a part of you, catches waves excellent, good in a wide range of conditions

Only if its Magic. Not Magic Johnson.

Magic boards are cheap, its part of what makes them magic.

I flew to Hawaii once and bought a surfboard there. I guess it would be 3,000 miles.

Performance. A shaper that doesn’t make a good board is out of biz. Durability doesn’t matter. If its magic it will be babied.
