Hi guys, I lurk around here when I need to repair any of my boards and when I was shaping my first board.
I use the search function but since this board is a favorite of mine I would like to get some confirmation of my pricedure before I am to repair the board.
Taking it for repairs to someone local is not an option unfortuantly.
Basically I would reapir as per post #2 in this threadusing the paste method.
but perhaps not even glassing over the top, rather just getting a smooth hot coat and buff.
depending on your skill & comfort level, I can think of a few options… cut and insert slivers of balsa, sand down flush, reglass. (do it right, don’t just slop resin over it)
or cut out the damaged wood with a razor knife and straight-edge, (or router and butterfly jig if you’re so inclined) patch in a new piece of balsa (even match the grain best you can), glass over. if you want to you can glass under too. Butterfly is the classic shape but you could go for a triangle shape patch given that you’re close to the edge of that balsa strip…
I would not use putty myself…not for a hole that size.
i’m not real experienced, but if that hole is on the bottom near the nose and not right under your front foot then you could probably get away with using putty or whatever.
it won’t look good but it is a lot less work. The main thing is get thebalsa watertight before you try to use the board again. I would take a close look just to the right of the gouge near the rail, it might just be the grain but in the photo it looks like it might be a small gouge with water damaged balsa.
Of course if you have a little patience you can do it the way keithmelville recommends. If you are careful you can make the board good as new with a nearly invisible repair.
Hey Trent, there is a little scratch on the side but the dark spot is just the grain.
All good advice will be fixing this weekend, if i cant get a grain to line up I was thinking of posca painting grain onto whatever I use before I glass over and hot coat…
