Quick easy compsand skin..... or not

okay, was daydreaming at work the other night. want to get into this compsand thing but still

just mind shaping. trying to think of CHEAP easy ways to get around the skin thing before i would

get to the full balsa bertsander… any ways,

how about this…

sheet of masonite smooth side up

sheet of 1/2" insulfoam

sheet of masonite smooth side down

lots of weight evenly distirbuted on top

maybe add a little heat

let sit for a day or two

remove from “press”

bam, 1/16" to 1/8" sheet of high density EPS. snow white, cheap, easy to cut and apply, did i mention cheap?

anyway, just thinking out loud. shoot it down, modify it, lemme know what you think.

Yup, sounds crazy.

I like it.

Go find a steam roller and borrow it for a few minutes.Shrink wrap tube it to a board.

Or put it in a bag with the masonite and pull full vac 24hg then let it bake.

Getting it tightly fused would be a prob and on a hot day the board may blow up like a balloon.

Door skin is pretty cheap-heavy-$12,bender ply$28,Xps hot wired thin$20,Bamboo-$32or Pu like a FW.

Keep worrying about the important stuff at work.

LOL, yah.

sometimes my job is … um … a little mindless… =)

so my mind kinda wanders

I dig it… after some of my infusion experiments this last two weeks I think it is possible. I am using 1.5lb eps and while under full vac the foam doesn’t distort but it is a fine line. If I use a roller or finger pressure I can compress the foam and it holds the indentation until cured.

I don’t know how well the foam will stay compressed without any resin/cloth.

I like your idea, and think a simple vac setup can be achieved for very cheap, there is plenty in the archives,

fridge comp- $10 (from your local appliance repair/junk man)

bag(fiberglasssupply.com) $.99 per yard

tape, hose, misc… $20

If needed perf release $1.03 per yard @60"-fiberglass supply

absorb material(fabric store polyester batting) $10

The last two only if you intend to bag the outer lam.

I am going to try some stuff this week, I’ll share my results.
