quick qeustion 'bout styrene

Hallo fellas, Do you need to add styrene to the gloss resin for a good gloss coat? I have a gallon of Gloss resin from Fiberglass supply and have read in various archives that certain folks who know way more than i do about glossing seem to add it. Also, just to sate my darker side…is it true that styrene is more or less “cancer-in-a-bottle” As always. Thanks in advance Drew

look up “msds” on google. you should find a site that will give you an alphabetical listing. look up styrene. it’ll tell you everything (and a lot of things you didn’t want) to know about it.

Howzit Drew, I add about 10-12% styrene to my gloss and some S.A. also. Check archives for more info. As for the toxic styrene, yes it is like cancer in a can, so use chem gloves when handling. I poke a hole in the lid of the can and just squirt it when needed.aloha, Kokua

Drew. If the gloss resin is surfboard gloss you do not need to add styrene. It will be thin enough. If you add 10-12% it will be like water. If you are talking about unwaxed gloss resin, you will need to add 3-5% wax in styrene to make sanding possible. David.

Howzit Drew, I’ve been working with glossing resin for over 30 years now and adding styrene to your glossing resin works great. 10 to 12 % styrene does thin it some but not quite to a water consistency. I find that this mix lets the gloss smooth out and there’s no wax streaks in the final coat which are actually tiny valleys which need to be sanded smooth. After a couple 100 glosses with this mix I haven’t rubbed through to show any weave so it’s thick enough to do the job and keeps the weight down also. Aloha, Kokua
