Quick tinting question

I’m thinking about tinting my first board,  but I am not planning on doing cutlaps on my laminating, just overlaps.    This is just for simplicity so hopefully there are less things to go wrong.

My question is is it nesesary to do a cutlap to get a good all over tint?   I’m just thinking that with an overlap lamination it may cause the tint to get darker in the overlaps as there is more layers.

I think the most likely thing that I will mess up is a cutlap so I’d rather have a white board than do that.

Tried to search this but there are so many resin tint posts It could be a long time before I find what im looking for.

Thanks

Do a cutlap and avoid darker colors. Red is also difficult. If you insist on doing a freelap - go for yellow. A cutlap is easier then freelap.

Have fun!

I freelap color but only the bottom and then I do a cutlap on the bottom. You can do color but only in opaque no tint. Like Yellow, Red or white. Any pastel colors. You do need to add a lot of pigment to make it a true opaque.

It also helps to do an extra clean freelap. Don’t worry about a little color on the foam because when you do the deck it won’t show through the top lam.

Good luck

Opaque it and you can do $#!tty free laps.  No matter.

Assuming its a mis-speak; but how do you do a free-lap on the bottom and then do a cut-lap on the bottom?

Really McDingo. Back to glassing 101 for you. The first step in glassing is the bottom right so you freelap then you tape off the bottom for a cut lap? Now you understand how you free lap the bottom and cutlap on the bottom. Still trying I see.

Thanks for the advice, looks like this board is not going to be tinted, I’ll give tinting a go a bit further down the road when i have learnt to cutlap

Hey Sano...I am doing an opaque powder blue tint and decided to risk it and free lap the bottom like you mentioned above just to save time...I now want to baste the lap and sand flush...here's my dilema...should I use the same tinited resin with some wax added so it continues to stain the foam OR do I use a clear baste - I'm worried that it will seal the foam and prevent the deck lam from achieving the same colour. It's very opaque so I guess it's academic and I'll be laying 2 layers of 6oz at the same time on the deck with a cut lap. I'd just like a second opinion....

You can see the colour on the last board I did on my blog below - that one I did cut lap top and bottom.

Make up your mind. It’s either opaque, or a tint. Can’t be both.

Prettyy simpIe, just asked for simple clarification.  Your first sentence in your first post idicates that  you would do BOTH a free-lap and a cutlap on the first layer of cloth(ie, the bottom).  Was simply asking how and why you would do that.  I was assuming you misspoke.  I can see why you left Maui. Ticklin' the ass of fat chicks down at "Old Mans" is a good scene for you.

Minds made up sammy. It’s opaque. Apologies for the confusion. Wasn’t aware that you only called them tints if it’s translucent.
