Hi all, in the process of shaping my first board, a mini Simmons . Any one have any tips on rail banding? What is the basic process and the best way to mark the rails to get good symmetry … Any help would’ve greatly appreciated
Definitely read the rail band thread, but to summarize:
Visualize the bands that are going to yield the desired rail shape.
Cut the bottom bands first, using tools that produce fair lines Planer is best, but on your first board that's not practical. Unless you're doing an ''up'' rail or 50/50, the bottom should be do-able with a sanding block. If you insist on using a surform (not a good tool, in the opinion of most pros), use it lengthwise like a plane.
The primary deck band is critical, and there's a lot of material to remove. A very coarse large block is a reasonable substitute for planer, but it's going to take a while. Make sure these bands are same side-to-side, if you get this right your rail thickness and foil will follow.
Break down the primary deck with secondary bands. Referring to the illustrations in the rail band thread will help.
Note that all bands are tapered, this relates to shape and thickness of rail at different points along board.
I've never, ever marked a rail band, there's really no need and it may just complicate things. It's likely you could hit all the marks and still get a wiggly rail.

Pretty good source of info for first time bands…
Thanks kiterider. I’m going to take your advice and use hand tools first time. I’m pretty much a feel type of guy too … I’m going to make some general marks and go slow…thanks for the help… I’ll post results
