rail scribe tool

Hey,

wondering what you all use for a rail marking tool? I’m looking for a tool that I can hold up to the flat rail after the template is cut out, before it is foiled, to make rail bands at 1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, going underneath the board and doing the same thing on the deck. I want the tool to run along the rail with a pencil dragging around the whole bottom, or deck.

what do you use?

the search function is your friend…

A scribe will give you an equidistant line from the edge. If you check Bill Barnfield’s timeless rail band photo, he “fades” his bands to a point at nose and tail. The maximum “depth” of the band is in the middle of the board. Unfortunately, you can’t really get that sort of line with a scribe tool.

If I need to scribe any shaping lines for rail bands I place sections of templates so I can fade the bands as needed.

Rail scribes are useful if you don’t like to freehand your cutlap tape or if you are laying out inlay patterns but they might not be the best tool for laying out railbands.

The best tool is a good eye and a planer!!!
