Been working on this logo for a ricepaper laminant and t-shirts.
Here’s the pencil rendering (what it looks like before I start to design it in Adobe Illustrator) I use to start. I don’t like to use photographs or copy anything directly. For authenticity I drew my own car at the angle that would allow the viewer to look into the roof cutaway.
Hope you had fun viewing this!

It’s good work ! Keep the brain rolling ! Herb
bitchin’! i dig rat rods…ever go to primere show in ventura???
No…what’s that like? Is it a large show? I usually go to the Classic Cheve Show in Seaport Village and the Wavecraft “woody” show in Encinitas. Speed week on Coraonado is usually pretty cool also. One day I would love to get a rolling chassis going in the garage. I am sure an old engine could’nt not be any more complicated than glassing and shaping surfboards? Last year I stood on the corner in La Mesa and painted a little. This is what I came up with.
really nice work mate.
primer show in ventura is ALL about rat rods, art, fashion and the accompanying music.cool vintage camping trailers and campers as well.well worth the trip…
I prefer the pencil to the adobe version, but both are very impressive.
Cheers.
Dane, Awesome artwork! I like the pencil rendering better than the computer version. IT has more soul. That’s just my two cents. By the way, Nice work on the pinlines last night. I was impressed. We should all plan a paddle-out one of these weekends. I’ll even drive down your way in the Cruiser. Give me a call sometime so we can work on that logo…619-757-0100.

Dane,
Something about surfing goes hand in hand with hotrods and ratrods. Most big name builders have a few rods in their garage. Tyler, Bing, Gene Cooper, etc. all have their special rides. I hear Gene’s wife has my all time favorite a 62 corvette as her daily driver.
We had a customer that shared our love for hotrods and built him the board below. Your logo looks great. Can’t wait to see it on a board.
Troy
bitchin’!!! by the way, what are dims of that board?
Dims are as follows.
8’0x23x3 with an 18 inch nose and 15.5 tail.
Austin
thanks. i guess the “8” ball should have been a clue as to length.that thing is way to cool man!!!
Hi Dane,
Really like it too - the pencil rendering is so finished and has a nice feel to it.
Full respect to your art and whatever you want to do with it,
but just wondering what it would look like if you imported the illustrator line art into photoshop and layered it over the top of the pencil rendering. Play around with it so the texture from the pencil comes through - so you got the best of both, the clean lines and soulfulness of the original rendering.
That’s just an idea y’know and not a critism of the art or anything - because it looks fantastic!!
I like this one as well, though I’d be concerned about the shadow suddenly ending in a straight edge
Drop the shadow and you can put it anywhere on the board… keep it and you might have problems finding a place that looks right…
hi tsaunders, is this the car your talking about?
Dane, Your a shredder! VERY impressive work. well done!!!
Hey Gene,
You gotta love those curves Gene and yes the car is great too! The red white color scheme is classic. I’ve been teaching 4th grade for 11 years now and each year I tell my class when they grow up and become rich and famous they can buy their old teacher a 62 vette to say thanks. I’m thinking that by the time I retire I would have taught over 600 students some I might have a chance to get one that way. I think, on my teacher salary, probably the only way!!
Troy
By the way new boards are looking great.
hi troy, actually we sold that car('61) to my brother-in-law a couple of months ago and my wife bought a '66. i caught the bug when i drove her’s and bought myself a '67. i know i have a problem and i’m dealing with it.
the way i see it a driver quality C1(53-62) is still a bargain if you buy right, and the value goes up while you own and enjoy it. less $ than your average new car in many cases but you’ve got to do a lot of homework before buying.
stock is the way i like them so i’m no hotroder, sorry about the post hijack.
like with surfboards, they got everything right in '67.
Gene, those are some sweet cars! Love that body style! I would post a pic of my rusty old 72 suburban but I dont want any swaylockers barfing on their computers…
