‘Bunker Spreckles was Clark Gable’s nephew, taught to surf by Hawaiian beach boys and heir to a sugar fortune. Re-teaming with director/publisher/surfer Takuji Masuda, EMP is helping to undertake this ambitious documentary effort. From South Africa to Hawaii and back to California, our cameras chronicle a darker side of Seventies era surf culture through a reflection on the legend and lore of Bunker.’
Actually, I thought he was Gable’s stepson.
Looks like they are making a documentary.
Question: Is it easier to raise one’s consciousness when one is heir to a fortune and has the free time to do so? Or is it more difficult for the same reason? Or was the real challenge to overcome his actual first name of Adolph?
Howzit tiktokman, Actually I think Bunker was Gables stepson because he married Bunkers mom. I remember Bunker telling me how Gable would take them on wonderful trip to exotic places like Africa.Aloha,Kokua
You might try Guy Motil or his brother as they filmed in our area around that time. I had one of his “edge boards” that had little handles sunk into the rails. It was pretty beat and pink so I gave it to my friend Greg. I was a grom but remember him having a complete set of Stevie’s. You might try a search of “total involvement surfing” as there was a group of surfers here who were standing, knee-riding, hand-boarding and other things all on the same wave. Pretty impressive stuff in perfect surf…
Chip you might do a search on Vinny Bryant he made some spacey boards for Bunker on the Northshore around 69-70. I have a aussie mag. with an article on him, Ill look it up later I gotta go to work.
Famous from the Clark Gable thing, but money came from the Spreckles side. Imperial Valley Spreckles Sugar, Spreckles Theater in SD. Big San Diego people in the 1800. Spreckles were even bigger in the San Jaquin Valley, a la “Grapes of Wrath”. All the trapping for a fast life. 70’s, Surf, Youth, Money, Drugs. So much talent and vigor wasted
Howzit Kirk, Vinnie Bryan lives up Power House road in Wainiha with his wife Chris and occasionally still shapes some strange looking boards. Gary Motil lives in Moolaa and I see him every so often when he wants me to order him fins from FCS. I also send repair work to Gary. Aloha,Kokua
CR III and Brewer did an article on Bunker for a mag called Super-X that was put out sporadically and was deliberatly made hard to find- if you want I could photo copy it and mail it to you (I’m not savvy enough to scan and send it, you know what us NZers are like with technology) PM me if you’re interested. Super-X was a great mag- the article that evolved into the Dogtown book was first run there along with other great stuff like Stecyk in Cuba and really early interviews with the likes of Donovan Frankenreiter. All the issues have been compiled into a book but it runs about $200 so a photo copy is not a bad option.
I watched Bunker at malibu one day in the early seventies. He was there with a few friends from Hawaii and a beautiful girl. the guy was super fit and athletic ,kinda like Bertelman. He was doing all this 360, switchstance , outrageous stuff ,just messing around . The guy was unreal to watch and EVERYONE was just tripping out on the guy . Someone mentioned ,he was this rich guy from Hawaii. His antics that day would blowminds even today…
