Greetings all. i have some old boards, Greg Noll, Hobie, various others that I am ready to refurbish. I've glassed and shaped and on and on for a while now, but have never learned the secret of recoloring old boards. Some of the restored boards i see are completely covered with new color and the logo is left intact, others, just seems to have glossed over old damage and re-enhanced the colors already there. What is the accepted practice and then how do you do any of it? Is it gel-coat, automotive paint, tints? I don't want to go down to the original foam if that helps define my options.
If you hack that Noll I'll personally drive over there and kick your ass. Show some pictures and we will tell you what kind of restoration is needed. All color work should be done with pigments and tints. Knowing if the board is going to be a rider or a wall hanger is another critical piece-o-imformation that is critical. Meaning: when I do wall hangers I get all the dings and heal dents out of the board, but that adds a bit o weight. Riders get a little color to cover the rails usually, and the deck stays clear,...all dings made water tight. etc.
Step by step instruction is a little bit witchcraft, voodoo, and luck. And those instructions are buried in this website (like 2005 or so) when I was a weaker person (meaning I took a lot of shit and questions). We can talk it through on the phone if you'd like, but I won't post another how to.
So first off:
condition, heritage of board, what you want to accomplish, how much you are willing to take on?
If i hack it, I'll give you driving directions and pay for the gas. I'll likely surf it once before all is said and done, but it's a wall hanger. Was my father in law's, never left the family, met my wife because of it. Great story, but for another time. I'll work on photos, but in the meantime just getting old wax off, areas prepped. I don't rush on this stuff. Only now glassing a board I put back together that I found washed up from mavericks almost fifteen years ago. I wait for my knowledge base to build before i take on the ones that scare me. Planning on doing the Hobie first, as it's a less than stellar shape and not many problems with it. I've done a ton of this stuff, so don't need help there, Just the coloring. but thanks for the intial contact, and I'll be back with photos. Actually just found an old one.
from this angle it looks like it's pretty tight, just some foam staining? Nice tband stringer and pinlines. red comp stripe and a solid Noll Logo, but the red has faded. Is that the fat man logo, or is it the Noll film productions logo?.....looks like fat man?
I don't see many dings?
If you re-color, or I should say over color it it you will kill any value and the true intention of the surfboard designer. If you decided to color over it I would recommend shoot color over the entire left panel...nose to tail. That would cover the left hand staining, while leaving some good foam on the right hand side. You'd have to re do the pinlines but thats a no brainer.
Just tape it off and paint on some heavy pigmented sanding resin...lightly sand and gloss over. Polish out.
Not a bad board just the way it is.
By the way, that's some funny shit:
"If i hack it, I'll give you driving directions and pay for the gas"
Your funny...........
