RE hull bottoms

I’m about to hape the bottom of my first board, It’s a 6’10 singlefin, diamond tail. I was going to do a rolled bottom to vee, i was reading on the “post hull pics” thread, I think it was Lee VV said, they are hard to surf. Is this due to the stability in the paddle? What can I expect. To be honest, it’s all trial and error for when I make my 9’4" step deck.

Cheers.

i’ve only ridden mine in decent waves once - and it wuz plunty fun. There’s some learning to do tho, and it seems you do need the right waves for them. I came off a thruster and fish.

They are only hard to surf because you cannot impose your will/style on them. You have to surf within the parameters of the design. They paddle fine, you might have to stay inside with the 6’2" potato chip thrusters though.

Unless you combine all of the other attributes of a “hull” (wide point forward of middle, parallel outline, pinched rails and minimal rocker) you will end up with something that will ride completely different than a Liddle/Anderson/Bojorquez/Jones/Andrieni/Kellogg/Gross style “hull”. Is that bad? Not necessarily.

But; “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. Go for it and see what happens.

I can say this about your bottom contours; the board will seem slow unless it is on one rail or the other. If you have fairly well shaped waves with some push it should work ok. Be mindful that the deeper or more radical the roll and vee, the more quirky the board will handle. Again, not necessarily a bad thing. Just something to think about.

Last thought…be sure to blend all the bottom contours as smoothly as you can. That will help keep the performance predictable.

first off, i wouldn’t put any v in a 6’10" hull . if you do, then keep it all in front of fin and have the tail aft of fin dead flat.

ARE there many diamond tail hulls around ?

if so , does anyone have photos of the bottom with that tail , please ?

(Most of the hull bottomed boards I have seen have been roundtails or rounded pins.)

Cheers Lee, Matt, Ben.

My noserider has a slight roll on the bottom, and pinched 50/50 rails, i was going to do something similar, but a vee thru the tail.

The shape had a pin at first Ben, but i rarely surf waves where a pin becomes of much value, so i nipped the back end off it and anyway, i love diamonds…

I think I have a good idea how to compromise, like you say lee, nothing ventured…

I can see me very quickly shaping board number 2, might not even wait til this is finished before I start!!!

Happy waves all.

im getting ready to do one simular …6’4 dimond real round on bottom

super sharp pinched rails …machine flat wide tail

mega skinny 10 volan fin…it has and outline like a classic lopaz 70’s pipe board…a buddy cut the outline moved out and left the blank…

center forward…
