I’ve been buying old beatup longboards to strip and reshape. I’m on my second and noticed that I’ll once again be into the softer deck foam when I’m done re-shaping. For the first one, I just glassed it using 2 layers of 4 oz and a 3/4+ length deck patch using epoxy resin. I noticed pressures after the first surf. The waves were solid overhead.
Anyone have input on what they do for this to make the deck stronger?
My current plan is to add a wood skin with a layer of glass over and under. I can do Balsa (1/16", 1/8"), Wiliwili (Hawaiian Balsa) milled to any thickness, some 1/42" veneer we’ve already layed up with glass backing, or corecork. I also have some 9 oz glass if I just want to go with double or triple glass.
Not my expertise, but how about using some Skinz? That should prevent the deck from denting. Maybe rotate the glass a little off axis or use some multi axis glass? The Skinz could be the ticket. Plenty of experts here to guide you.
all the best
Thanks Greg, I don’t have Skinz, but I have the other stuff.
we should just text each other and skip the extra step of posting here. you solve my board bag prob, I solve your deck prob. ha
Greg, go with the Hydrogen peroxide and then something to add a sweet smell. Hydrogen Peroxide is an amazing product. I keep lots of it here. Especially for cuts, but it’s great at killing any bacteria. I use it as a mouthwash too. Costco here sells it in a 3 pack? or 2 pack. Probably more than enough to soak your bag in.
I’m getting the shapes to where I’m really happy with the way the boards work so I want these boards to last. I can always buy a real blank if these get trashed, but they have a different rocker than new blanks (flatter) and I kinda like the way it’s working out so far.
Hopefully someone else will add some insight.
