re: surfing dvds

hi !

I just wondered if you Americans have trouble playing dvds from other countries , as I read elsewhere that some copies of ‘Crystal Voyager’ wouldn’t play in the states ??

I assumed [perhaps wrongly] that dvd systems were UNIVERSAL. I knew your video stuff was different , but hoped that playing dvds there would be no hassle.

Anyone know for sure ?

any help / feedback / experience of this happening to you appreciated [as well as any solution[s] too , hopefully!]

…cheers !

yeah chip, we couldn’t play it here. the americas’ dvd players are region 1, and we would need all region dvd players. they are out there, i have no idea the cost of them.

Hola,

DVD players here in Europe at only 50€ (=50$ approx.) including latest VCD and DIVX codecs (not updatable).

You can use the program (freeware) DVDShrink to make a “back up for your personal use” of any DVD and the BackUp copy can be done “region free”.

Chip - Yes.

Coque - Thanks for the nice e-mail update about your first time as an ASP judge. It sounds as if you will be a good asset.

All the best!

wouldn’t this “backup copy for personal use” still need to be coded specifically in PAL or NTSC

if its region free is will play on all players its the when the dvd it recorded for a region that compatability problems occur.

If you have a playstation 2 there is a DVD you can buy that allowes all regions to be used on it.

my Mac lets you change regional codes 5 times… pehraps other systems have similar options…

Should be ok playing it on the PC

Type in ‘DVD Hack’ in google as using the settings on the dvd player you apparently can take the region code of…

However, don’t blame me if you stuff your player up

Josh.

Soulstice, i really don’t know because i play most of the DVDs on the PC (my girl and her friends own the TV, DVD player, VCR and the living room, you know how this works…), but i think that almost every DVD player con play Pal DVDs on an NTSC TV, at least here it works in the other way.

Skip, thanks, actualy i judged more than 10 ASP contest, but this one was the first of this season… we’ll see. This year they added “flow” and “variety of repertorie” to the criteria, something that sounds really nice to me…

Most DVD players are pretty easy to make region free and googling for hack and make and model will in most cases lead you to the hack. PC DVD drives can only be changed 5 times and as far as I know can’t he made region free
