Re: What was "Sam"?

Do you think Nat Young`s famous (world title) surfboard, “Sam”, should now be understood as a longer shortboard, or just a shorter longboard?

Do you think Nat Young`s famous (world title) surfboard, “Sam”, > should now be understood as a longer shortboard, or just a shorter > longboard? just a surfboard ahead of its time? i think it was 9’4" he really wasn’t doing the board justice calling it sam, he really should have called it george

just a surfboard ahead of its time?>>> i think it was 9’4">>> he really wasn’t doing the board justice calling it sam, he really should > have called it george I’D be interested in knowing if there was more tail rocker or how much lighter it was since Nat wasn’t big on noseriding like Nuuhiwa

Great question Dale! Here is some info I found on this board: 1966 Sam - a Joey Cabell derivative designed by Bob McTavish, George Greenough (fin) and others (Cord Surfboards, Honessee Surfboards-Qld). Shaped by Nat Young(Gordon Woods Surfboards,Sydney). Fist ridden The Kick, Collaroy. Last ridden final 1966 World Titles, Ocean Beach California. The board disappeared during post-contest celebrations. Single stringer, thin rails, 9ft 4", 22 inches wide, 6 inches pod, 2.5 inches thick with 12 inch Greenough stage 2 fin. Looks like a progressive longboard, by today’s standards. As a sidenote, a few years ago, I was briefly involved with a fellow who was an auto loan agent, who claimed to have somehow owned “Sam” for a time (as a part of his growing collection… he was certain it was THE board, and I think it was in the late 70s to early 80s) when he lived in Oregon… until it mysteriously disappeared again!

Do you think Nat Young`s famous (world title) surfboard, “Sam”, > should now be understood as a longer shortboard, or just a shorter > longboard? Good question Dale!Especially when you watch footage of him surfin’ Sam- walks and noserides it like a longboard but rips turns and off the tops, etc, like a shortboard.Paul Gross has made a few “son of Sam” boards that are of the same dimensions(except thickness). After riding them I would consider that board a longer shortboard. The outline really is designed for crankin’ some serious turns as is the fin,as oppossed to pivot turn and noseride, like a true longboard.

Hey Dale ect. I have 2 of Paul Gross’s son of Sam boards .They surf like longer stubbies. There is a sweet spot on my 9’4’that just flys 4th gear. They were shaped out Phil Edwards blanks so the rocker would be low but they have a nice crown on the deck thin rails and greenough fins.Matt Miller begs for my 9’4’but I dangel it like a carrot in front of a mule. But now he got one of Gross’Velo’spoons …/!X#^(it.

Have you guys seen the pictures of Gene Cooper’s new "v"bottom boards? I was wondering if they were somewhat similar to “Sam”?

I did see Genes pics of that V bottom and I would say that they would surf the same, but those V,s can be hard to surf backside.I have a 8’0’stringerless V from aus.that Miget Farrley shaped it works great in junksurf 3 to 5 ft.

Thanks for the info.,Kirk. That brings up another question: why are they difficult to surf backside? I’m assuming also that anything over 6ft. and they would spin out? Isn’t that what happened when Nat rode his “v” at Sunset? Can you tell me why displacement hulls are also a bit difficult to surf backside? Mahalo.

i HAVE A 7’8" V-BOTTOM, displacement hulled board made by Paul Gross, with a 9.75" Greenough flex fin.If stuck with just 1 board this would be it-from 1’on up it rips, and never has it spun out.A friend in Spain has an identical 7’4" and has ridden it in powerful, double overhead beachbreaks and is just in awe of how it performs. If you would like more info let me know on this site and I’ll hook you up with Paul.(just ask KP how he likes my v-bottom, the snake!)

Right on,Matt. I was hoping you’d chime in. Yeah, I remember reading some of the articles Paul wrote for Longboard mag. and I also saw a couple examples of his shapes in a design forum. I’d appreciate any more info. Is he still busy with the Velo project?

Hey JD saw Matts Velo last night it is a true work of ART.I know Keith Malloy got the last one.Man the work and knowledge that went into that thing , unreal.Matt and I are working on posting pics .later KP.

Hey Flo its pretty much the same but it has a wider tail template and a liddle more tail rocker added V = a board that works in a variety of waves.not just point waves.KP.

Hey Flo its pretty much the same but it has a wider tail template and a > liddle more tail rocker added V = a board that works in a variety of > waves.not just point waves.KP. Flo: the v tends to stay over on the rail a little longer. This board also has more drive due to large fin and wider tail-16"It really like big,wind-blown surf, which liddles do not.The null and v really work togethr to smooth out the chop and utilize all that energy of the chop into forward momentum.I generally ride a Liddle or PG, but when it gets wind chop the v is the way to go.Essentially it surfs the same as the others but does so in a wider variety of conditions, thats why I said if I had to be stuck with just one board, the v-bottom would be it! enjoy the surf!
