Hey guys, Im super stoked to finally be glassing my first board! Is a great feeling to see the work youve created. Its a SUP, 11’x28"x4.5" and i have done quite a bit of reading around here and other websites ( i don’t mean to commit forum adultery!) and have some questions… I’ve read the thread titled Project Green Frog and that was super great but i noticed he laminated 2 layers of glass at the same time… or maybe i didnt see it right? If so, can you do that with my board? Im using 2 layers 6oz Volan on top and bottom (no stringer) then 2 yd of the 6oz as a deck patch. Or do I need to do all the layers separate within the first 24hrs (for a better eopxy bond) ?
When mixing your resin with hardener, say I need 45oz liquid, im guessing that means with a 2-1 epoxy, 30oz resin to 15oz hardener? Just making sure- epoxy resin is crazy expensive up here in the Arctic… I mean Canada… So jealous of those who can surf with no wetsuit!
Any other tips before i pioneer into the great yonder of glassing?
Thanks!
unless you want your board to come out heavy you want to do all the bottom layers in one shot then when that has cured lam all the top layers of glass at once
you should read the contaner that your resin came in to see what ratio it is, if it says 2:1 then yes 30oz of resin and 15oz of hardner is perfect
good luck
Why Volan cloth?
Why do you need two layers of cloth on the bottom?
I'm a glasser....you forgot to tell me about your foam...???? What Brand of resin?
PolyU or EPS ? Good stuff or low grade?

Stingray.............................................
When I glass a SUP I like to make two batches of epoxy. If I am glassing the bottom, one batch to glass the bottom and the 2nd batch to glass the rail lap. I weigh the 2:1 epoxy, 5 to 2 resin to hardner ratio.

Hello Jay,
I just finished laminating a 12'6" SUP. I did it solo just to prove I could do it. It's an Ego thing....Get yourself a few helpers and save a whole lot of stress. Laying up two layers of cloth at the same time is pretty standard for Swaylock's backyard glassers like me. I would only use one layer of cloth on the bottom but I don't know about your foam density. Volan cloth is very expensive compared to E cloth so I would not use it on your first glass job....but it's not uncommon for me to use whatever I can get my hands on. With Resin Research Epoxy the 2:1 mix has a good error factor engineered in so we have found that a good 3-5min stir is more important than a super accurate mix ratio.......Have fun!
Volan cause it was the cheapest per yard up here in 6oz. I got the s2000 epoxy from surfsource and am using home depot Eps. Not sure what density it is, but it is probably a lower grade foam. 2 layers top an bottom because I am going without a stringer and that seems to be the general consensus among other swaylockers and what they have done and the fiberglass place. Should I do the first layer of glass, wait till tacky then do the second layer? Or both at the same time?
Thanks for your input! :). When doing 2 layers at a time do you need double the epoxy? I guessed about 45oz to do the board for 1 layer so would I need 90oz?.. How much did you use? I am using surfsource epoxy. Haven’t heard any negatives about it. Does say to not mix below 60 degrees. Wonder if it could cure between 55-70? The nights up here drop down to the 50-60’s
Do both layers at the same time. Cut the outer layer of cloth 1-2" longer than the inner layer. That will help it lay up smoother
So I glassed the 2 bottom layers at the same time and not to my surprise i have some air bubbles! I figure ill let it tack up, cut em open a bit then sand and hot coat…or if they wont cause any structural issues i will just leave them and hot coat it…any input? im not caring so much about the appearance cause i will be coating the whole board in paint which brings me to my next question
i have this beautiful maroon marine grade paint. Tis a gloss finish. But its oil based… would that be fine over a sanded hot coat? or would it crack over time? Ive read that latex is better suited for such an application but i wonder if the marine grade is just as suitable?
As always, thanks!
ps…for those who are going to be doing their first layer of glass for the first time… do it the shade! lol my newb self left my pot out in the sun and what do yah know the last 1/4 of it dried right up! lol was way to into how cool glassing is
I knew I should of had my lady help me… but the ego can be ever so hard to say no to! lol it turned out okay. Have any pictures of yours?
