Yes, yes, i’ve searched in the archives but that gets very tiresome. I am looking to shape board #3, a semigun, for myself and would love some advice on length and dimensions. First off i am 5’10" 165lbs., i would say a descent paddler and experienced. I am looking for a board that i can take when the winter swells are macking. I was thinking maybe 6’8" ish.?? I actually rode a 7’7" rounded pin during the huge christmas swells down near cabo (on the pacific side) and it was very comfortable, natural. But i think maybe i could have gone smaller. 6’8" seems to be a common length and for my weight and height seems reasonable. Any advice is welcome.
Some times a 7’0 in your normal width and thickness is not as good as a beefier shorter board , say a 6’8. i prefer a longer board but I’m not riding it. If a 6’8 is what you want go for it.
What are you riding normally?
how large are the waves?
what size board do you want to ride?
pin or rounded pin definitely
Lee dd some help here?
Totally depends on where, how much paddling, what the rips, what you are used to riding…
My first semigun was 8’7" x 19", with a 10" tail, and was too small for most of the bigger days my third year surfing, so I made a 9’11" x 20, at around 3.75" thick, which was slightly too big, so I chopped the pin 4", and thinned the deck out to around 3.15", and was just fine.
A minigun can be 6’8" x 17.5, or by 20.5, and it’s a world of difference.
I used to ride a Brewer (Morgan) 7’6" x 19.25 tri fin as my smallest board, and it worked well.
But some years, a 5’ x 20 single fin did the job all summer…
The world is open…
